  • Cool double cones for gelato! - Portland
    Cool double cones for
    gelato!
    by Biljana
This is a pretty trendy looking gelato shop. They offer various flavours and have lots of places for people to sit down and relax. The location is central so it is super easy to find it.

I had a massive cold during my visit so I only tried a bit of the gelato from a friend. Chocolate is the best..but I'm a chocoholic. They also offer this neat looking cone. The top of the cone splits into two cones which is great cause it leaves room for more gelato.

    Giant purpule octopus

As you will see once you read my food rating below, the food here leaves a lot to be desired. The neat part about our visit to this place was the entertainment. We ended up here on a Sunday evening. Since the first floor was busy we were seated on the second floor where the dance floor is located. After we finished the meal we were approached by an older Greek man (I presume the owner of the restaurant) who proceeded to teach us some Greek dancing. This was rather entertaining. My group of friends looks like the UN so it was just funny to see people of such varied cultures and races dance Zorba the Greek style. This looks like a good place to come for a party on a Saturday nite, but if you are coming for the food you might as well look elsewhere.

Personally I didn't like the food at this place and neither did any of my friends (six of us ate there..and we all love food!). Their lemon ouzo soup tasted well like lemons. The lemon roasted potatoes tasted like they baked in the lemon soup for 24 hours. I ordered my usual Greek meal, kalamari, I found it to be below average in comparison to all the other Greek places I ever ate at. My friend that ate the chicken souvlaki was the only one semi-satisfied with the food here.

This small wine bar can be a lot of fun. Get a few friends, grab a table and choose one of many "packages" of wine tasting.
Wines range in price and taste to suit everyone.
Dinner is "small dishes". I'm torn on these. You get to sample a lot of great Northwest dishes - good. You pay full price - bad.
If you plan to eat a full meal and taste wine, expect $40 a piece - at least. I suggests a snack and go for the wine. Great feel to he place but it can be inconsistant and the price will always make you wallet jump a little...how much and I'm still hungry?

Our favorites are the pom frittes and the rabbit. Excellent, but very rich. Skip the desserts unless you just want a chololate plate.

Alatto Gelato might be just that but the shop is small with very little seating. The best spot to sit is at the window as NW 23rd is, if anything, a great place to people watch. I imagine that during the summer a line will go out the door but in the winter you don't find the crowds flocking to have a cold treat.

One thing you should try is a monthly flavor. I think they usually have one or two that they change every month but I have not been disappointed yet. The only downfall is that is you find one you love it may not be around forever.

I don’t have a favorite dish but did enjoy the chocolate. I heard the coconut was good but haven’t tried it yet – I’ll let you know if I do.

  • Large tea and other beverage bar at Bay Leaf - Portland
    Large tea and other beverage
    bar at Bay Leaf

The restaurant is nominally Chinese, and in many ways Chinese customs are followed. Chinese music plays over the PA system, and to add to overall feng shui there is a fountain in the corner.

A large bar occupies one side of the main dining floor, and both it and the tables are beautifully crafted wood.

As a general rule, the prices seem to be a little above average compared to what you get. For example, $7 for a relatively small plate of food, and between $3 and $5 for tea. So, while the prices are relatively low compared to Portland's most expensive restaurants, the amount of food is much less too.

At the same time, by keeping the restaurant relatively crowd free, it is a relatively quiet and pleasant dining environment.

    Whatever is on special.

The 14,500 sq. foot restaurant boasts 100 beers and hard ciders on tap. Combining the nostalgia of rustic exposed brick walls and dramatic 24 foot ceilings with state-of-the-art features such as a built-in frozen drink rail to keep libations cold, and flat screen and plasma TVs visible throughout the bar, Henry‘s provides a "best of both worlds" atmosphere. Its extensive menu features dinner-house quality and presentation of Northwest and Pacific Rim cuisine, never to be confused with standard "pub grub" faire.
The exceptionally diverse menu features fresh seafood, USDA choice steaks, cutting edge pasta selections, and authentic Asian preparations. All dishes are made from scratch on the premises, including salads, sandwiches, and pizza, and are served at their peak of freshness.

I had the halibut with fresh asparagus and garlic mashed red potatoes.....to die for! The halibut was very fresh and everything was full of flavor.

Rollin had the flatiron steak....melt in your mouth good!

    And the service is AWESOME!

Burgerville is a local chain of fast food places that is trying to offer a healthier, more eco-friendly alternative to the big guys. All the foodstuffs are local grown or produced, for example. I stopped in for a cheeseburger on my drive out of town. I'm not sure if lived up to the hype, but Burgerville is very much part of that Oregon spirit which I admire.

The restaurant may not be in the best part of the city, but the food is awesome and it is cheap. They have a taco stand outside that has rockin tacos and other Mexican quick bites. Their entrees and other dishes in the sit down section are very authentic. I am Hispanic so I should know about most kinds of Latin food.

Their horchatas are heavenly. I also like their tacos al pastor, a kind of bbq pork, chicken tacos, their seafood cocktails, mojarras (deep fried tilapia fish), pork with green chile sauce and just about everything else. Prices per person can be $3-12 depending on what you want. If you go to the taco stand, you can get good tacos starting at that price and the entrees can range from $7-12.
