Street Kids by deWilde There is a huge communal of runaway kids [and homeless] that hang out at the waterfront park by the Burnside Bridge. You can’t miss them and although there may be some great people in the group… they have been known to steal from others. Avoid them if possible. Leave a Comment

Its a city and with it comes crime. Maybe not as much as other places but seeing it take place made many more stories about it come out. In this particular case we were in a bar watching the Yankees/Seattle game on a Sunday afternoon. Popular transportation method is bicycles. Well right out from of the bar we watched was someone undid the lock from the bike (about 5 minutes before we realized) and then reattached the lock to what it was on without the bike and rode off. Well a huge chase ensued. Finally a worker in a cherry picker lowered the boom on the guy and he was arrested a couple minutes later inside a video store. Leave a Comment

Old Town is a pleasant area to visit, but also has it share of agressive panhandlers and drug dealing. You may feel apprehensive while in this area. Don't say anything to the panhandlers, just ignore. During daylight areas it is fairly safe, as evening approaches it becomes a little less safe. Don't get me wrong, this is not a crime ridden area that you should avoid at all costs. Leave a Comment

I still don't understand them. If you find a space without a meter, watch for signs that say 'Pay to Park' -- there's probably a computerized meter terminal thingie somewhere on the block. Put your money in, print out a receipt, and post it on your curbside window. Leave a Comment

Maneuvering Portland is easy once you learn how the city quadrants are laid out; however, there are many streets with no turns allowed and many precarious intersections. Burnside is the main and probably best known street in Portland -- it divides the city into North/South quadrants. There are few if any turns allowed on Burnside from I-405 until the Burnside Bridge. On the east side, there is a particularly dangerous intersection where Burnside, Sandy and 11th meet in sort of an asterisk pattern. The lanes are cramped and you must use caution about which lane to be in! Leave a Comment

One of Oregon's many wonders by yallpeoples Despite Portland's apparent safeness, the drivers sometimes remind me of old ladies because they don't keep up with the pace of traffic and aren't always paying attention. Pedestrians think they own the damn street and are always cutting in front of you. Starting 1/1/04, if you don't give the pedestrian the way to cross the street, you get ticketed $108. Be careful. The intersections of Sandy and 39th have cameras in their traffic lights which ticket you if you pass a yellow light. There are other intersections, but the rule of thumb is that if you see a traffic light with something funny looking with a camera box, they are watching you. For those who love to carry guns, Oregon is not the place to do it. You'll land in jail for a long time. Leave a Comment

Uncontrolled Portland intersection: be aware by glabah A number of Portland (and some suburbs such as Gladstone and Oregon City) intersections in residential areas are still uncontrolled. See the photo: there is no stop sign or even a yield sign on any of the corners of this street intersection. About 30 seconds before I took this photo, some women went blasting through this at about 40 mph (the speed limit is 25!). While she didn't hit anyone, if two such people ignore the type of intersection they are entering a collision is going to happen. If Driving or Cycling: 1. Keep the speed limit: 25 mph in Portland residential areas. 2. Watch for traffic, particularly those who aren't paying attention to where they are going. 3. Pay attention to the type of intersection, and be particularly observant around these that have no control devices. If walking: pay particular attention to 2 and 3 above at this type of intersection. Portland is slowly working on trying to eliminate these, but work is slow, and there are many intersections in the lightly traveled residential areas that only see a few cars a day. Leave a Comment

Portland sidewalks are festooned with inlaid metal plates every other block or so in the downtown core area. No, they are not decorative; they are entirely utilitarian, capping underground elevators, subterranean maintenance & control, etc. Juxtaposition of the plates, slippery tennis shoe spin-offs, unwary tourists, and the Monsoon Season can create unexpected problems. Some are as slippery as snot on a doorknob. Take care.

Driving around Portland is very easy and doable. But...certain times of the day there are places to avoid. Listen to the radio for traffic updates in the morning, 8-9 ish and afternoon 3:30-6 p.m. ish. I-5 can be a mess going to and from Vancouver at those times and I-26 is very busy and can be backed up for miles, often. Listen to the radio and stay away when they say so, it can be bad. It's best to take public transportation within the city also. It is free whithin a certain block radius. It's a nightmare to drive downtown almost all the time. It's made up of one ways and is full of construction usually. You can go in circles for hours. Leave a Comment
