Oregon Shopping

  • Downtown area

    Portland Shopping

A wonderful store filled with traditional clothing, furnishings and a terrific selection of classic hats of all shapes and materials. This is a rarity: a third generation business (run by John Helmer III) alive-and-well in the 21st Century. Suits and sportcoats in all weights of fabrics. Especially wide range of ascots! Very upmarket ($750 on up...

  • 'Eclectic' Hawthorne District

    Portland Shopping

Wow- I happened on this place and it was like walking into a dream- as a health-counscious vegan I usually have to be picky about a menu, but everything here is for me! I had an INCREDIBLE mint-chocolate milkshake (no milk, of course) and "a taste of the sea". The place is in a revamped old Victorian building, and is stunning- it was worth it to me...

  • Saturday Market

    Portland Shopping

Portland's popular Saturday Market, for decades a fixture under and near the Burnside Bridge, was mostly forced to leave its longtime home due to redevelopment plans for the area directly south of the Burnside Bridge. 2009 was the first year to visit the market in its new location, with a new structure to allow vendors to use Waterfront Park as...

  • 'Everything' stores

    Portland Shopping

Although not limited to the Portland area, the Made in Oregon stores are a good place to go if you are looking for that unique gift for someone who wants something from Oregon, but you are not sure what to get them. Also available in these stores is a wide assortment of Oregon only food and other items, including everything from the expected post...

  • Books

    Portland Shopping

The name of this tip pretty much says it all: for some decades now, when you mention Portland, Oregon anywhere in the world, likely you will get the response "Oh, I just love Powell's Books". Not anything about our public art, or public transportation, or our climate. Only one particular independent bookstore. At least that has been my...

  • Antiques

    Portland Shopping

Generally, when people talk about furniture and other items made in China, the feeling is that the goods are made there because they can be made cheaply in China's vast factory complexes. This is not the case with items purchased from Denali. The items here, while they are made in China, are in the style of old Chinese craftsman, or in many cases...

  • Malls

    Portland Shopping

Coming from a small community where shopping is limited, I love going to Washington Square, which has 140 specialty shops (from Abercrombie & Finch to Zumiez, a skateboard/snowboard store), a food court and several department stores. Most people take malls for granted, I know, so it would be no big deal for most people. I love just spending time...

  • NW 23rd

    Portland Shopping

23rd is the "hip" area to shop. While having a few mainstay shops of The Gap, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware and a couple others at one end; you quickly move into independant shops everywhere. Mens clothers, womens, house decor, furniture, card shops, gifts, nick knacks, and everything the 3 Monkeys stores have to offer. You can find just about...

  • Glass blowing

We'd seen glass blowing shops before. Why we stopped at this one is anyones guess. But I think we got a good one. The Edge is a shop, gallery, store and classroom. It was very interesting to watch the artisans at work behind the glass wall. And then while we were there a couple came in for a personal class. That was fun to watch as well. The...

  • Mrytlewood

Myrtlewood only grows in very specific areas, southern Oregon being one of them. It is a hardwood broadleaf evergreen. The leaves can be used much like Bay leaves in stews and soups. The wood is prized for it's beauty. We stopped at this shop in Garibaldi which claims to be the northern most Myrtlewood shop along the coast. It isn't much to look at...

  • GIGANTIC Bookstore!!

Powell's is a huge bookstore located in downtown Portland. It is a booklover's paradise!!! I spent over two hours there and could have stayed longer. Powell's can be very overwhelming but there are maps available to navigate you around the store. They have a great variety of new, used and out of print books. Normal price for books....

  • Open Air Shopping in Downtown Salem

It was lunch on a Wednesday and we attempted to follow the signs to Salem's historic district by exiting I-5 at Exit 248. Mistake. The signage wasn't very good and it took forever but we did get to downtown. Exit 253 would have been a quicker and better alternative. At any rate, we drove around downtown and spotted a group of white tents set up on...

  • It's all made in Oregon

I'm sure almost every other state has it's own version, but the Made in Oregon stores are great! There are 11 of them in Oregon, most in the Portland area. Locations include the Portland International Airport, downtown Portland (at 921 SW Morrison and 10 SW 1st St.), at the three large shopping centers in and near Portland (Washington Square, Lloyd...

  • Buying Alcohol in Oregon

I discovered, somewhat by accident, that the cost of hard booze in Oregon is identical no matter where you go.This is because the liquor stores act more as agents for the government agency that distributes the alcohol rather than as independent vendors.I don't think this "rule" pertains to beer & wine.

  • Arts and crafts

The Portland Saturday Market is a fantastic way to spend a Saturday or Sunday. Shop the shops and stalls for beautiful gifts and "artsy" things. Most are hand crafted by local artisans. Another place to shop for "local" items, including wines, are the Made In Oregon Shops. You will know it when you see it. How much/little do you have?
