Sweet Home Things to Do

From the footbridge at the bottom of Royal Terrace, continue taking two right forks. You will clamber along the edge of McDowell Creek - the second right fork is right after crossing the stream on another footbridge - and shortly after crossing the road, you come to the 20 foot high Crystal Pool cascade. A steep waytrail takes you down where you...

Just beyond Crystal Pool is the 39 foot Majestic Falls. The trail goes over a bridge to a viewpoint structure offering a great view of the falls. You can also scamper along the rocks below the falls. A couple of flights of stairs and you come out atop another viewing platform atop the falls. Picture time.

Look hard at the waters as they dash below. Mists drifts away and the roar never ends. Light plays among the streams of water, forming the inevitable rainbow.

From the first parking area - 'Royal Terrace Falls' - you cross McDowell Creek on a small bridge and you can see the top of a waterfall to your right. From the picnic area, bootpaths take off under the undergrowth and tunnel you to pools below. The waters here area not snowfed in summer, so are warm enough to invite swimming.

After leaving the first parking area on foot, cross McDowell Creek and wander a short ways through the lush forest. Three part, 119 foot high Royal terrace Falls awaits you as it tumbles over and down basalt cliffsides. A long bridge crosses the small creek below the waterfall.

Before crossing the bridge below Royal Terrace Falls, steep stairs lead up and above the falls. A loose footpath leads to the pool at the bottom of the upper falls. Cliffs are covered with ferns kept moistened by the constant spray from the falls.

The Cone Peak/Iron Mountain hiking loop off US 20 at Tombstone Pass - just west of the highway junction below Santiam Pass - is one of the best places to experience the magnificence of the Cascade Mountain wildflower show. The whole loop is only a little under 7 miles and the views and flowers are truly grand. The best direction from the parking lot...

Dating to 1937, the Weddle Bridge crossed Thomas Creek not far from the town of Jefferson. It is similar in construction to other Thomas Creek bridges - Gilkey, Hannah and Jordan - with open sides allowing air to pass through and reduce rot. A concrete span made the bridge redundant in 1980 and it was dismantled in 1987. Locals here in Sweet Home...

Built in 1932, the bridge was bypassed by the neighboring concrete span in 1963 - though only after the original rounded portals had been squared off to allow larger loads - i.e. log trucks - to pass through. The bridge was neglected for years and finally after flood damage in 1996, the county repaired the bridge to its present condition making it...

The Santiam Jamboree is held every year in Sweet Home, Oregon. In 2009, it is July 31-August 2. Leanne Rimes, and many other top C/W performers will be there. You need to make reservations very early. There is camping for only about 5000 vehicles near town and the campgrounds within 10 miles fill up pretty fast as well. The city of Lebanon, 13 miles west has campgrounds, hotels, motels, to absorb some of the overflow. You can contact the Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce for more data and to see if tickets are still available. Sweet Home is a pretty small and quiet place except for the Jamboree and the high school football home games.
