Vortex, schmortex

by cruisingbug

The Oregon Vortex, featured on various national TV shows, was a waste of time and money, IMHO. Animals avoid the area, Indians dubbed it Forbidden Ground, trees lean toward magnetic north, people shrink and grow, balls roll uphill, brooms stand on end, mice tap-dance. Yada yada. Well, they don't claim the thing about the mice. But it's all an elaborate illusion. Video cameras are verboten, although hubby did use his digital camera to record the uphill rolling of the ball. Unfortunately no secrets were revealed. What's bothersome is the price they charge ($7 per person) and the fact that even though you KNOW it's all fake, you can't figure out how it's done. And although it's a "half hour tour", it took a good 2 hours from our day (driving there, waiting for a group, "guided" tour, post-tour "picture show"). So, better just to skip it and spend more time in Crater Lake or the...

Getting soaked and shrunk, Oregon Vortex
Tillamook Cheese Factory

by bicycle_girl

Well if you want to be with loads of tourists that come in huge motor homes and that do the touristy things, go right ahead. There is a huge store to buy cheese products and other cheesy things (pun intended) from stuffed animals to keychains to postcards to whatever you think your grand ma would love to have... At least have a taste at the cheese (for free) if you can bear standing in line for it or buy some ice cream. Oregon is full of natural places like the coastal area, from Astoria to Brookings. Save your time by going hiking, surfing, doing beach thingsor anything else on your mind!

by DesertRat

Stonehenge Memorial, Maryhill (WA) -- In the 1930s a local lumber magnate went to the UK and became fascinated with Stonehenge. He couldn't ship it back stone by stone, so he did the next best thing: He commissioned an architect to draw up plans for a duplicate as it *might* have appeared when it was built a few millenia ago. It really wasn't worth the stop, but the whole notion is so preposterous -- and the monument itself is such high kitsch -- that maybe it *is* a 'fun' thing to do if you happen to be around. The one saving grace is that there are no souvenir stands selling terracotta Stonehenge ashtrays. You can't even get a Coke, come to think of it.

The Sea Lion Caves in the central Oregon coast is a big disappointment. A family of 5 will pay over $50.00 to go down an elevator and look at something they can see for free in any cove around the coast...sea lions. They just happen to have an elevator and a large open cave-like cove where sea lions will also hang out.
