Erie is home to the U.S. Brig (Flagship) Niagara, the ship Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry commanded in the Battle of Lake Erie. The ship sails the Great Lakes during the summer visiting several cities along the way. When it is in port, the ship is open to walking tours and sailing tours. It is a great piece of history and I would encourage you to see it! Visit http://www.brigniagara.org/ to learn more about it. This is a great history lesson about the war of 1812. Ride in the brig Niagara,and help put up the sails by hand. The captain gives a talk of the battle for Lake Erie and the hero Comodore Perry. His battlecry was "Don't give up the ship"
The original brig Niagara was built in Erie in 1812-1813. She sailed from Erie to the Western end of Lake Erie in September 1813 to engage the British fleet.
After the British were defeated, Commodore Oliver H. Perry uttered the now famous words:
"We have met the enemy and they are ours-- two ships, two brigs, one schooner and one sloop."
If you visit the Erie Maritime Museum, you will get a great history lesson about the Niagara, the Battle of Lake Erie, and Commodore Perry.
You'll be able to tour the brig with admission, and if you plan ahead, you may be able to go for a sail out on Lake Erie. Contact the museum about a "day sail". It's an amazing experience.
