This museum on the lakeshore is dedicated to Erie's history as a Great Lakes port with emphasis on Erie's role in the War of 1812. The highlight of the museum is a tour on a recreation of the Brig US Niagra, which was commanded by Oliver Perry in the war of 1812.

This is one of Pennsylvania's lesser-known museums. It commemorates the victory of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry at the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. In this battle, he defeated a larger British fleet. Afterward, he sent a now-famous dispatch to his commander, General William Harrison: “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”

The museum contains a number of models, uniforms, personal effects of Commodore Perry and his sailors, and other memorabilia. One particularly striking feature is a re-created section of 19th century sailing ship, with the effects of real cannon fire (they hit it with a real vintage cannon to achieve this).

Another point of interest is an exhibit devoted to the Wolverine, formely the USS Michigan. This was the US Navy's first ironclad ship. She cruised the Great Lakes for over a century, from 1844 until right after World War II.

Finally, a full-size replica of the brig USS Niagara, one of Perry's ships, stands just outside. She is available for tours on Lake Erie. Sadly, my visit met with foul weather, so there were no cruises that day.
