Amtrak train from Philadelphia(left) will take 1 1/2 hours. On the right, well-preserved GGI locomotive, the former workhorse of the PA RR, designed by Raymond Loewy, 1930

    Bus Ride full of fun

  • I went down on a yellow school bus. While on the bus I sat in the back with my friends Clyde, Adam, and Kammy. Clyde and me picked on eachother the whole way down. We went past a farm and smelt some cow manure and I told him he should check his pants. Then he saw a duck and said it was my brother and we both laughed the whole time. Adam said the whole bus was insane. And I told him that I was sane and he said "oh ok at least the is one sane person on this bus" Bus rides are usly a lot of fun when you go with a group of friends and sometimes even when you don't know anyone it is alright to talk to someone and get to know them.

    Getting better...

  • Harrisburg has always had traffic problems and mostly because of road construction. For years, it was US 322, but that's finally finished. Then it was the I-83/I-81 interchange. FINALLY, they put an express lane down the median to fix that problem. And a constant nuisance is rt 11/15 around Marysville and Enola. BUT there's a nice way around that most people don't know if they are just passing through.

If you're coming up rt 15 from Maryland and approaching Harrisburg, DO NOT exit off to keep following this highway.

Stay STRAIGHT into the city, toward the M. Harvey Taylor Bridge. Cross over it, onto Forrester.

Take Forrester to the end, turn L onto 7th and immediately right onto Herr St.

At the stoplight on Herr, take a L onto Cameron. This will put you onto 322W heading toward State College. Or you can get onto 81N and S to 83S to 283, the airport and turnpike

322 is 4 lane divided, 55mph highway where NO ONE drives less than 80mph. No stoplights, no reduced speed zones.

You'll cross over the Duncannon Bridge and see the exit shortly thereafter for 11/15 N (Selinsgrove) where you'll hook back up with it.

This avoids ALL congestion--the city is never crowded and it saves about 20 mins at the very least.

(Rt 11/15 is the most convenient way to get from the DC area or points south up to central PA and central NY state...pretty heavily traveled road.)

This will probably appear under a few of my tips because there's a lot to do at City Island. The nicest part is that from the city, you have to take pedestrian bridge over to the island. It's no little bridge either, it's spans the same length of the road and rail bridges across the Susquehanna. At the park, there are a number of things going on, mostly recreational activities like boating, the city island beach, kite flying, picnicking, watching a minor league baseball game, batting cages, volleyball, ball fields, attending concerts, carriage rides, little railroad and trolley rides, eating, etc. etc. etc.
It's a lot like being at the shore/beach but you're in central Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania State Capitol building is supposed to be one of the nicest state capitol buildings in the US. I don't know about that--haven't seen all of them--but it's pretty impressive. It was "architecturally inspired" by St. Peters Basilica in Rome and dedicated by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1906. The inside is even more impressive than the outside...

I can't remember how much the dome weighs right now, but it's a massive amount of weight. The inside is decorated with marble and gold leafing...great murals, too, impressive rotunda. I like this building! There are free tours given of the facility daily...

The other buildings within the complex include the finance, forum, labor and industry, health and welfare buildings as well as the senate and house chambers (as part of the capitol building...)

Soldiers Grove is a lot like the Mall in DC (this whole complex is somewhat like Capitol Hill in DC) but on a smaller scale.

Another surprisingly very nice museum in Harrisburg. The state museum has a huge collection, given the size of the city and the fact larger, more well known museums are just a couple hours away. The way the website decribes it and I think it's the best way to do so, is that "it's the story of Pennsylvania's history from earth's beginning to the present." It's really that. It doesn't touch on just one theme, though--there's archeology, anthropology, astronomy (including a HUGE planetarium) technology, etc. So, while the focus is on Pennsylvania, it's not a dry presentation of the history, like it very well could be.

    It's free to get in, too...open Tues-Sat.
