    house at kitchen kettle village

A lovely place to stop for lunch or to browse around the delightful shops. There are 39 speciality shops displaying everything from local art, fine leather coats and accessories, engraved signs, folk art, hand thrown pottery, food, music boxes and hand made quilts.

If you are feeling peckish you might be tempted by the hand rolled fudge, home made ice cream, jams and preserves, cakes, hot pretzels and freshly baked goodies.

    Countryside

This is a random pic of the countryside of this area of Pennsylvania. As you can see there are plenty of fields in which to roll around in the hay. Other than that you can see the travel options with use of the road. Quite the summation of things all in this one pic.

    Americana Shopping

by smschley Written Jan 29, 2005

If I was shopping in San Francisco and saw a lot of the items that are being sold in Intercourse I probably would think it to be tacky and pass right by. Somehow knowing that the items in front of me are being made and produced by the people in the area and not in some sweat shop in China gives it value and meaning.

Within walking distance around the Village are art galleries, museums, lodgings, camping, educational opportunities and Pennsylvania Dutch taste sensations in local restaurants and specialty shops: a corner cupboard, quilt, redwood bird feeder, dried flower arrangement, handcrafted item or a picture from a local artist. When it comes to shopping for Americana, this is the place to be. A wide variety of shops line both sides of the street, from quilts through art, handcrafts, dolls, and much more

    Amish Farm & House

So you want to see what an Amish house really looks like? Well …knocking on the door of one of their house isn’t going to work, ………well it might but I’m not that brave. The next best choice is to visit the Amish Farm & House.

Thousands of people visit Amish Country throughout the year, and it is no wonder why. The way of life led by the Old Order House Amish shown here presents us with a fairly realistic view of a real Amish working farm.. The tour starts in the front room of the stone house, where Sunday worship services are sometimes held. This lovely house is furnished in the traditional Amish way simple and clean. An 1802 Limestone Quarry provided the stone for this house and also the barn in the back

Outside there are some two dozen attractions. If you want to try your hand at milking a cow there is a large replica of a Holstein dairy cow with a rubber udder for milking. It’s not quite real but the kids love it. There is also a water wheel that operates a well pump via a unique system of wires strung along poles. In the Spring House a large water wheel powers an old "Peter Shirk Pump" which forces the cold spring water into the kitchen refrigerator.

The barn is complete with hay mows and threshing floor, with overhead scaffolding for hanging and air-curing tobacco. The Tobacco Shed includes the stripping room, dampening cellar, prize tobacco, bailing press, and other implements. The working Blacksmith Shop includes a working Blacksmith who is usually on hand to shape a horseshoe for those who want to take home a little bit of luck.

Of course, this is a farm, and complete with more than twenty species of animals, as well as the various buildings and equipment needed to support them.
