These are the best lunch spots in the Lancaster area. It can get crowded, so they do call-ahead take-out, which always gives you a pickle and chips with your sandwich. But dining in is also nice. Very casual. A must.
Favorite Dish: Bird of Paradise (green olives, lettuce, melted provolone, tomato)
We had lunch in the Quarryville Family Restaurant. This is a typical American style cafe but it had regional items that had never had before - Shoo Fly Pie, Philly Cheese Steaks and something else ( I have forgotten the name) which the waitress had trouble describing. Apparently it was an aquired taste - ususlly something to avoid!
Since it is a typical American cafe, you can get an idea of what the locals are like and what sort of foods are eaten in the area.
Favorite Dish: I had a sandwich with corned beef and saurkraut on rye bread. GF had a Philly cheese steak which was quite tastey. For dessert, I had the Shoo Fly Pie. This is a type of pie with a sort of molasses filling. It was too rich for me - maybe a scoop of ice cream would have helped!
The food is plentiful and very plain. It is served family style. While it is not to everyone's taste, it is nourishing and filling.
