    The railroad buildings

    Railroad buildings

Favorite thing: Lots of interesting old buildings have been restored,... and even tho things are kind of touristy and commercialized, I have to be glad that the town still exists and is being taken care of. I think I'd like to go when the crowds are not there.

    Victorian remembrance

by Pawtuxet Updated Jun 1, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Another re-use of an older structure. Here we see a restaurant enjoying the space of an old Victorian homestead. Makes an interesting spot for lunch or dinner.
Who doesn't love sitting on a front porch watching the folks around town go by?

    Coming Through!! clang..clang..clang..ding! ding!

by Pawtuxet Updated Jun 1, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    New Hope & Ivyland RR

Favorite thing: Every once in a while you hear the clanging and know that the railroad crossing is about to close to car traffic. It's a treat to see the huge engine steaming across the street, so close to the buildings and modern day traffic. It's a beautifully kept train....offering specialty rides for Father's Day,l Easter Bunny tours, Trick or Treat Halloween trains, and such. You could have a child's birthday party on the train or do a private charter.
Everyone seemed excited just to see it coming through.

    Runaway mules

by Pawtuxet Updated Jun 1, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: This was the excitement of our visit to New Hope. As we sat on the bridge waiting for the mules and boat to come by for a photo, the mules were a bit fussy. The trainer was struggling to make them behave. Suddenly the ropes broke and the mules took off at a healthy trot...with trainer hanging from the side of the saddle, trying to stop them or get on top of the runaway. It was quite a while before he stopped them. Meantime the boat was adrift in the canal...filled with tourists wondering what was next. Eventually, the boatsman got his long pole and pushed toward shore, the mule driver got the critters back where they belonged, and the tourists were delivered safely to their destination. Just a fun little "happening" on a lazy sunny afternoon.

    Welcome to Pennsylvania

    Main Street intersection

Favorite thing: There is a bridge connecting Pennsylvania to New Jersey. It isn't the major thoroughfare to arrive there...but many people use the bridge to visit both Lambertville on the NJ side, and New Hope on the Penna. side. Starbucks has a prime location at the corner soon as you get over the bridge and enter Main Street at the main intersection.

    Indian Motorcycle

Favorite thing: During the summer and nice weather days of spring and fall, you will have to compete for parking with the cycle crowd. :)

The cool things is that some of the Motorcycles are beautiful machines. The one in this pic is a fully restored Indian.. who knows what this thing is worth!!! New Hope is a place to see and be seen.. so, they like to show off their bikes.

The next few tips will be some views of some of the bikes.

Favorite thing: Go for a boat ride on the Delaware. Boat tickets can be purchased at Giesingers Ice Cream. Giesingers Ice Cream Parlour is famous for its unusual flavors like Rosewater, Huckleberry and Ginger ice cream.

Fondest memory: Riding through New Hope and up Route 611 during an ice storm with some friends. It beat the scariest amusement park rides. It was a definitely check your knickers ride since we were travelling in a rental car on a sheet of ice down a narrow twisty road a few feet from the raging waters of the Delaware. And I was driving. In retrospect, it was an amazingly beautiful ride but during the drive, I had other things on my mind like staying alive.

Favorite thing: Steam train ride is fun for adults and kids.

Fondest memory: The ride from Route 78 to New Hope along Route 611 South to Route 32 South. Point Pleasant is a very pleasant-looking village with expensive antique shops and cute stone houses. Beautiful, meandering road along the Delaware that passes wee stone houses, farm land, small villages etc..Some famous newswoman died along this road years ago. Can't remember her name but she had a few drinks, misjudged a small bridge, ended up in the canal and drowned. Not so nice story but it does remind one to be careful on this road!

Favorite thing: Stroll the side streets, watch geese fly over the river, browse among the antique and other specialty shops, sample some unusual (even bizarre) ice cream flavors... A little touristy, but for good reason. There are also some *very* high quality local restaurants.

Favorite thing: New Hope is the place for any big city bloke to escape the humdrum routine of city life. This is a walking town, and that is what you are here to do. New Hope is a small town of only four major streets (Main St., Bridge St., Ferry St., and Mechanic St.). The streets are lined with antique shops, art galleries, restaurants, and bars. Make sure to get lost down one of the quaint little alley-ways and side streets and wander along the cobblestone walks. You will find many surprising nooks and crannies.
