Visitors to Frank Lloyd Wright's 'Fallingwater, should not miss 'Kentuck Knob', a house designed by Wright for the Hagan family. Wright was 86 when it was commissioned and is one of the last houses he designed. He was occupies on many projects at the time, and famously said he could “shake it (Kentuck Knob) out of his sleeve at will”, never even...more
The Cucumber Run, a tributary to the Youghiogheny River tumbles off a 30 foot high sandstone shelf into the gorge carved by the Yough. It is pretty spectacular if the stream is running high, as it was on the wet day we were in the Ohiopyle State Park. The parking area is just off the Kentuck Road, and it takes only a few minutes to walk to the...more
Walk across the the curved bridge with its distinctive arches, to the forested peninsula, surrounded on 3 sides by the looping Youghiogeny river. The trails are flat and easy walking - follow the black blazed. It is a little over 3km to complete the loop trail. After rails, the trails on the peninsula can be a little muddy and slippery, but not...more
The Laurel mountain hiking trail is a seventy mile trek along a stretch on top of the Allegheny highland mountains. Trekking this can take an individual any number of days or hours. Wow two Frank Lloyd Wrights in the same town...Kentuck Knob is a smaller private home built on the top of a hill, with a style all its own. Great views and don't miss the sculpture garden, it is full of suprises, and some famous names in modern art.Far less known and travelled than Fallingwater, and a much more intimate experience.more
We came for a snack lunch on our day tour of the Ohiopyle region. It was a wet day and the small town was deserted. Our first choice, the Firefly Grill was closed, so we tried the well reviewed Ohiopyle Bakery & Sandwich Shoppe, and found it pretty overrated. We ordered pepperoni rolls (loaded and unloaded), which were OK, but not served...more
In order to avoid trouble, just follow these simple rules. Don't have any alcohol in the State Park, do not run the falls except at the annual falls race, and do not jump off the US 381 brigde into the river.
(But as you can see from this photo a friend and i forgot that rule once!)
Watch out for poison oak on the trails. The park is busy on weekends, so don't come expecting solitude then.
Take a river Trip! At least 7 miles of class III and IV rapids, excellent shuttle service and plenty of ways to enjoy it. Novices can take a fun guided raft trip, or experienced kayakers can hit the rapids in a kayak. See: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/ohio.htm I have paddled it at all times of the year, and my personal favorite is...more
Don't miss Fallingwater, the historic home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It has a stunning natural setting over a creek--only you can't actually see the creek from the house (you can hear it, though). The house is so well integrated into its surroundings it feels a bit like a treehouse. Not all the doorways and windows seem practical, however....more
