Chadds Ford, PA
The Battle of Brandywine was fought in this area during the Revolutionary War. The site is now 50 acres of rolling parks and woodlands with historical exhibits and picnic facilities. There’s a re-enactment of the battle in September with the participants wearing authentic costumes and using Revolutionary War weaponry.

Favorite thing: The house was near Chadds Ford, where the British were expected to cross the river. Washington used the house to plan his strategy agiast british General William Howe, meeting with his generals on September 9th.
The house was damaged by a fire in the early 1930s, and restored to the condition it was when Washington met there at the end of the summer in 1777.

The Marquis de LaFayette, famous for his contribution to the United States during the Revolution, saw his first military action in America at the Battle of Brandywine.

Favorite thing: He used the house of Gideon Gilpin, a Quaker farmer, as his headquarters. This property was plundered by soldiers after the battle. Gilpin filed a claim for losses in September 1777, which included 10 milch cows, 1 yoke oxen, 48 sheep, 28 swine, 12 tons of hay, 230 bushels of wheat, 50 lbs. bacon, a history book, and one gun.

The Battle of the Brandywine and the American Revolution are presented in the park's modern Visitor Center. An
exhibit and audio-visual presentation tell the story of
the battle in the context of the Philadelphia Campaign of 1777.
Hours of Operation
The grounds and historic houses are open Tuesday - Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday, noon to 5:00 pm.
The park and all facilities are closed Mondays.
The battlefield is located on Route 1 in Chadds Ford, on your left as you head north toward Philadelphia and on your right as you head toward Kennet Square and Longwood Gardens.

This was George Washington's Headquarters on the evening before the battle. It was a farmhouse owned at that time by Benjamin Ring, a Quaker farmer and miller.
