Walnut Street Theatre: Another great theater

Walnut Street is the oldest theater in America and has been in continuous operation since 1809. It's a great place to see a show and even inspired a poem from me.

I saw a play called "Moon Over Buffalo" in 1998 and wrote the following:

    Moon Over Buffalo
performed at the Walnut Street Theater,
    Center City, Philadelphia
    ----------------------------------------------
From the balcony I could see it all,
all that was good about this place.
    Those unsettled, settling here
    to appreciate the ticket girl,
    the coat-check and gas lamps.
    Vintage signs provide the decor.
So unlike the city and smaller still.

In frayed jeans, a man sat down
directly behind me in row thirty.
    Accompanied by a polished lady,
    they discussed the bank merger,
    an investment property and
    the plummeting values of both
as the curtain lifted on stage.

The actors all had strong voices
that easily soared to the balcony
into the weekend crowd of urbanity
safely confined in those old walls,
    away from mergers and muggers.
The crowd united and stole the night
    back with uproarious laughter.

    Despite the vigorous applause,
the final curtain had to fall.
And as it did, very few people
rose to hurry away into the city
to see if their arrogant moon
    still floated over Philadelphia
    without noticing the masses below.

I waited for the ticket girl outside.
    She was from the neighborhood
and knew it was unwise to walk alone.
Her young eyes had seen too much,
plays only performed on the street.
But this night she only saw my eyes
smiling at her beneath the moonlight.
