Continental Mid-town: Great food...but what's up with the water?!!!

When I first saw the Continental from the outside, I honestly thought it was a diner. I figured I'd grab a burger or an omelet. Guess what: it isn't a diner. The Continental is an upscale restaurant serving an eclectic menu, specializing in Asian cuisine. The interior is dark (but not too dark), the atmosphere is modern, the service is fast and the food is quite good.

Now about the water and, yes, I should have seen this coming. The restaurant is noisy, so I could barely make out what they were saying. They asked me what kind of water I wanted and left me a bottle. Here I am, thinking it's free. It's not. The water cost $6.00. A lesson learned: next time they offer you water, you may want to decline.

Favorite Dish: I had some delicious pad thai. The portions are huge, but I was able to put most of it away. Next time, I'll go for the thai lettuce wrap.

    Continental: Martini Bar and Restaurant

Asian-Fusion Hot-spot. This is one of the restaurants that started the happening scene in Olde City. Steven Starr's first of many trendy restaurants all over philly. Starr opened Mid-town Continental a few years ago - roof deck is really cool (use side elevator for access and try to go early so you can get in - it gets crowded). I especially like the Olde City Continental but both have outside tables which are dog-friendly.

Family style portions made for sharing - great for groups of 4 or more for sampling of many items off the menu.

Favorite Dish: Espresso Martini, Calamari Salad and Lobster Mash. SMASHING!!!!

Four legged friends welcome at outside tables at both locations.

    Continental
    THE place to be seen.
Can you say, 'the beautiful people?'
It is an old diner that has been transformed into a Martini bar (shaken, not stirred), with amazing results. There's always a line outside the door, but for good reason, the food is great and the sights aren't bad either.

*tip: don't sit outside unless you like bus fumes with your martini!

Favorite Dish: Continental Salad (a sort of Greek-Asian compilation).
Everything is good. Lots of small plates as the place serves up treat after treat, 'continental style.'

I was told that this is a great Martini bar and restaurant. We had already had dinner, and were looking to sit somewhere quietly and talk, so this wasn't the best place for that.

We'll go back another time though.....

the Continental, seen from Cuba Libre

Austin Powers would feel right at home in the '60's look Continential, with its impressive selection of martinis and poshed-up comfort food. Continental also serves brunch.

Favorite Dish: Tough to pick a favorite, everything is quite good.

  • Continental-Midtown: Don't Go There

The drinks were great but the staff was horrible. They let their male friends mock and harass the women at the bar. They stood buy as every woman got heckled and harassed. You couldn't report it because their buddies on the staff would not care. It was a horrible experience which is a shame because it WAS one of my favorite bars. You should not PAY me to go back there again.

The Continental Midtown is arguably more convenient than its sister in Old City, and you can't beat the rooftop deck with fabulous views of the skyline--up close. While drinks and food are pricey, it's a good experience but not nearly as exotic as the other Stephen Starr restaurants of Philadelphia. Still, a good place to meet up with friends and feel very urbane...and the food is uniformly good too!

  • Continental: Good for small plates and late night food

    by kna109 Written Nov 8, 2007

Cute classic enviroment, service can be a bit slow especially for the bar, but they do offer some good small plates for table sharing. Good martini variety.

Favorite Dish: The Hummus plate and calamari salad are a great combo for two people to split.

Continental: MORE A PLACE TO DRINK THAN TO EAT

by enofile Updated Feb 1, 2005

The Continental is a restaurant designed and conceived by a man who has done the same for about 10 restaurants in Philadelphia. The vision is to create a dining spot that becomes a scene for the young and trendy with unique decor and mediocre food. I would certainly go and have a cocktail and check out the beautiful people. There is a ton of eye candy.

    Favorite Dish: An apple martini.

We might haven chosed this restaurant if it wasn't raining heavily but we were very happy to have discovered this great restaurant.
This restaurant could easily have fitted in with New York or Washingtons trendy bars. The design was very trendy and the staff was friendly minded and informed us that the food would arrive when it was done.
We had 2 starters: The bruschetta and steamed edamame. The bruschetta wasn't typical italian but tasted really well. The edamame was steamed perfectly.

For the main course we those NY Strip Steak with wild mushroom and spinach ragout, fingerling potatoes and marsala wine demi. It tasted really good and only cost $20. Overall we were very happy except when they didn't bring us back the change($7). I guess that they thought it was their tips.

Book ahead - this is a popular and busy venue. We had to wait for some 30 minutes. The service is good, but they can be over attentive from time to time.

Good portions and menu choice - professional and young staff.

Favorite Dish: try a mix of menu items - please note some of them are quite small.
