Joe's Peking Duck House: Joe's Peking Duck House
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is just a hole in the wall Chinese restaurant, like all the restaurants in Chinatown, but the food is the best anywhere!

Black bean snails -- smells like death, but tastes like heaven! And their Shumai is amazing.

  • Tip Rating:
  • In South Philly, there is an absolutely fantastic local Italian place called Priori's. It's extremely small, they only take cash, and its straight out of a gangster flick. Rumor has it a local mob boss was shot at the bar several years back, and you can see the bullethole there. The food is staple American-Italian, and the mussels are some of the best I've had.

  • Tip Rating:
  • One of my favorite restaurants (even though its been years since I've been there) is called Cafe Nola, located on Philly's always interesting South Street (116 South). This is a cajun restaurant with a cool atmosphere and great food - a nice change of pace from the other places along South Street!

    My favorite restaurant for...
  • Tip Rating:
  • My favorite restaurant for real Philadelphia food is right on South Street. I'm not even sure this place has a name. Any way, the restaurant is right under Ruby Tuesday's (huge, happening bar on S. Street) in between a GNC diet/ fitness store and a travel agency. It looks like a hole in the wall and probably is but they have the best pizza and cheese steaks in the world (especially after you've had a few too many and need to fill your stomach).
The unique quality to my favorite restaurant is the bathroom. I wouldn't recommend using it but peek your head inside and admire the artwork that has accumulated on the walls over the past 20 years. Not to be missed. The other selling point is that it is right on South Street, very inexpensive, and you can almost always find a seat.

Get a cheese steak hoagie from a real Philly restaurant (no Subway) they are usually pizza parlors but everyone makes cheese steaks. A cheese steak hoagie consists of a white bread roll (submarine style), Steak-Um's type meat (very thin slices of steak for those not familiar w/ Steak Um's), your choice of cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo (optional), and whatever else you want on it. Trust me, if you get someone to make it that knows what they are doing it's heaven.

Gooey Looies: The ultimate calorie buster!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are looking for the ultimate in "pig-out" food, then this is the place to go. The locale doesn't warrant much to talk about, but it's a local mom and pop store that dishes out huge cheese steaks.

For a few bucks, you get a 12 inch Philly Cheesesteak (with the works), chips and drink.

    a diner's HEAVEN
  • Satisfaction:
  • If there's one thing that I absolutely LOVE about Philly, its the fact that we have a lot of GREAT resturants and they don't get lost in the mix. Unlike NY which is entirely way too big to decide on where to eat (and too expensive) philly is just the right size...

There's everything from finer dining places (the fountain, and any of stephan starr's places...) to really glam places - to little spots to eat outisde (around 2nd and market area) - to ethnic foods such as ethiopean and middle eastern places that are GREAT and cheap...

I'd recommend... Sahara Grill - its a middle eastern place on walnut street near Broad - its small and really cheap - but the food is AWESOME...

ERA has ethiopean cuisine (poplar and 28th) that is again, cheap, and preety good - the place is more of a dive bar however :)

Near Chinatown tehre's a place called "VIETNAM"... which vietnamese food that is cheap and OUTSTANDING - dont get it confused with vietname palace... this place is just called "vietnam" - its GREAT

going more upper scale there's place like Davio's, Zanzibar Blue and Warmdaddy's (live jazz on most nights) that are GREAT ...

the Plough and the Stars has outdoor seats too and its SO cute - the food is awesome (especially their bailey's creme brulee)
