Nothing makes a Philadelphian feel at home like a Philly cheesesteak. It’s hardly a complicated concept, a long bread roll filled with slices of brisket and cheese, sometimes onions, but it’s where you eat it that causes so much fervid discussion. The two major rivals are Pat’s and Gino’s which have faced each other across a small intersection in South Philadelphia in a greasy, calorie-loaded stand-off since the 1960’s. They even both stay open twenty four hours a day, three hundred and sixty five days a year to make sure the one doesn’t get a jump on the other. A trip to either, or more diplomatically both, has always been on the agenda of visiting politicians. Clinton failed to do the “Philly lean” - where you try to position your body so its’ clear of any fall-out - and managed to get grease on his shirt while John Kerry nearly holed his campaign before it started by asking for Swiss cheese with his steak, a crime the locals consider as serious as going to a Philadelphia Eagles ball game and cheering for the Dolphins. I tried both versions one evening and confess I preferred Pat’s for the way it sliced its meat but in saying so, I’d alienate half the people I know in Philadelphia. Whisper it, but Jim’s in South Street is probably better than either. Leave a Comment

I don't have a favorite restaurant, but for the truly adventurous, try Nappy Nikki's (sp?).
They have chitterling cheesesteaks. I can't tell you how they taste, I haven't had the heart or the inclination. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: on Wayne Avenue near the intersection of Wayne and Pulaski (Germantown area).Other Contact: the 53 goes there :)

So many great restaurants in downtown! Japanese at Gengi, dining outside at Audrey Clare's, Striped Bass, Le Bec Fin and Susanno Foo are thought to have the best food in town.
Gengi: sushi is the best. Audrey Clare has great lamb chops, and American food. Striped Bass is very upscale seafood -and has great Striped bass! Le Bec Fin and Susanna Foo are very expensive, but worth every penny. Had read in a tourist book one extremely famous restaurant in Philly made great steak sandwiches. Found the place, queued ONE HOUR outside the restaurant and finally tastes the sandwiches, which were great and really original... Still it is a fast food restaurant, so you will it there... fast. And the restaurant itself is not amazingly beautiful. Loved it because I felt I had shared something very local that only people who lived in Philly or had been there knew. Also because the sandwiches are also great.

Recognized as one of Philadelphias great new establishments Amada is an outstanding tapas restaurant located in Old City. With a beautiful and simple decor the food is the highlight here and has been named Philadelphia's best new restaurant by a local magazine.

Excellent coffee, and great owner. Though he may have a stand-offish first impression (probably because of all the students browsing and not buying) he is actually very warm, great to talk to, and has a fantastic memory. Has coffee from all over the world, and he can explain the different tastes to you. There isnt a seating area, it is coffee to go. The chocolate covered coffee beans are also an excellent wake-upper for the college all nighters... He also has a selection of magaznines, journals, and newspapers from around the world, great chocolates, and high-end cigarettes.

My husband and I have celebrated several birthdays and a wedding anniversary here, and have never been disappointed. It is a cozy restaurant, with dining in the basement and a bar at street level. The spiral staircase down to the dining area is elegant, and the lighting is romantically dim. The last time we were there, however, a busload of adults who had just finished viewing a play at the Walnut Street Theatre was eating there as well, so it is not JUST for romantic dinners. The food has always been excellent, and there is lots of it! I always have food to take home for a lunch the next day. The waiters prepare the salad tableside. The entrees range from pasta dishes to veal, chicken and steak dishes. On our first wedding anniversary, we were offered free dessert! Bistro Romano offers mystery dinner theatre as well, and I believe that takes place at street level in the bar area, but we have not attended one of those yet.
My favorite entree from this restaurant is the Fusilli Pompeii. It is a HUGE plate of corkscrew pasta with chicken chunks, white beans and spinach in a herb sauce (the menu states it comes with peppers as well, but I ask them to leave those out). The herb sauce complements the dish nicely, by being just spicy enough without overpowering the dish.
