If you are traveling through the North side of Pittsburgh, to the Mexican War Streets or to Allegheny General Hospital, Legends would be a good choice for a meal. We dropped by at lunch time when the tables were filling up quickly. We were led passed the snug counter seating to a comfortable table for two near a window overlooking the corner of North Avenue and James Street. Someone promptly took our beverage order and in minutes we were reading over the menus. It was flurrying that morning, so I quickly asked for a steaming cup of hot chocolate which really hit the spot! The Fish Sandwich (fried cod with tartar sauce on a Kaiser roll) looked like a great choice. I ordered fries to accompany my meal and Mom chose wedding soup. The fish was very good, but the bun disintegrated as I nibbled. The fries were not very crispy either. However, Mom's wedding soup was delicious with large chunks of meat and vegetables with a delicious chicken broth. We shared a generous slice of coconut cream pie, saving some calories...ok, we should probably have skipped it, but....it was so good. Other choices might be Penne Vodka ($10.95 & $14.95); Gnocchi Bolognese ($10.95 & $14.95); Lamb Rack Chops ($20.95); Pizza Margherita ($15.00); Deluxe Cheeseburger ($8.95). Hours are Mon.-Thurs. 11am-9pm; Fri.-Sat. 11am-10pm; Sun. catering and private parties. Similar to the original Primanti's at the Strip District, the Market Square location is just a tiny corner restaurant and bar with seating for about 30. The old fashioned tile floor, stainless steel counter, and of course the signature giant cheese steak sandwiches all lead to a great dining experience. The menu at all 5 downtown locations is the same with the hot sandwiches topped with fries and slaw, along with a few other simple dishes such as chili, salads, and chicken fingers. Unlike the original, the Market Square location is only open from 11am to 11pm. It is located just one block from PPG place and maybe 3 blocks from the cultural/theater district (Liberty Ave). The Penn Brewery on Pittsburgh's North Shore is one of my favorite places in Pittsburgh. Unique and full of character, this restaurant is the unusual combination of microbrewery and German restaurant. The beers here are all on the lighter side and include a pilsner, weizen, holiday bock, and their relatively dark lager called Penn Dark. Food covers the spectrum of German dishes from schnitzel to a variety of wursts. The restaurant interior closely resembles an authentic German beer hall with its long tables and benches that can be shared by customers on busy days. There is also a small 8-person bar. We sat at the bar during our visit where we enjoyed a few of the great beers including the Penn Dark and the weizen (22 ounces for $4.50 and 16 ounces for $3.50). I enjoyed a great meal of their rouladen with red cabbage and spaetzle ($17) while my friend had the Wurstplatte which offered three of their tasty German sausages along with sauerkraut ($14). The rouladen was very tasty with some wonderful gravy, but not really like the rouladen I remember from Germany...as this had pickles inside the meat. The wursts were also good, but one tasted suspiciously like a PNC Park hot dog. This restaurant is a great experience and has some awesome beer. The food is unique and flavorful, but not quite what I remember from Germany! Happy Hour is from 5 to 7 and specials vary by the day: Monday Penn Dark $2/pint; Tuesday Penn Pilsner $2/pint; Wednesday Penn Weizen $3/22oz; Thursday Bartenders Choice $2/pint. Dave and Andy's is definitely the best place to buy ice cream in Pittsburgh! Their ice cream is homemade, and they have a wide variety of flavors, from the ordinary vanilla to mango! Because they have so many flavors, they rotate them (the most popular are usually not rotated), so you may not see the same flavors every time you go! Aside from ice cream, they also have frozen yogurts, sherberts, and low-fat ice cream. Their milk shakes and malts are also popular. Dave and Andy's has won many awards for their ice cream, but if you're still not convinced, then try it yourself! You won't be disappointed! Steak & cheese, IC Light, and some hot sauce by Ewingjr98, 4 more photos Primanti Brothers in the Strip District is Pittsburgh's most unique restaurant. Situated in a small hole-in-the-wall, Primanti's is open 24 hours a day and is always busy. Their specialty is sandwiches, most of which include sliced meat, coleslaw, tomatoes and French fries, all on inch-thick Italian bread. Add some Texas Pete hot sauce or a fried egg to complete your masterpiece. Sandwiches are around $5 each and IC Light beers are $3 a bottle. My last visit to the Strip District location was at 2 am and I still had to wait 20 minutes for a sandwich because there were so many others in line ahead of me! But was it ever tasty! The place was so packed we had to sit on the bar side of the restaurant and walk over to the grill to order...pain in the ass but worth it! The original location in the Strip District opened in 1933, and Primanti's now has 10 restaurants plus numerous stands in PNC Park. We used to eat at Primanti's every time we went to a Pirates game. The Travel Channel rated Primati's as the 7th best place to "pig out" then the next year upped their standing to the world's 4th best place to "pig out." This is possibly the most non-pretentious, enjoyable restaurant in town. There are a few locations around town, including on in PNC Park. It's diner-style, where you can choose to sit at the counter or at a little table. The staff is friendly, but the place gets packed late at night (especially in the Strip District) so be prepared for a wait.
Cheese Steak Sandwhich (not your Philly Cheesesteak): Italian bread, steak, cheese, coleslaw, french fries, tomatoes (I'm sure I'm missing something). Add some hot sauce on top. Dining in Xi'an by crewrower I took a short trip to Xi'an in 2003 during the National Holiday (October 1st). Perhaps it was luck or just excpetional hunger, but I was impressed with every restaurant I went to. From dumplings to hot pot, to simply asking for recommendations at a particular restaurant, everything was great. The only thing I wish I hadn't of done was order shrimp for the hot pot in Xi'an; I should have known that the shrimp available there would be small and sickly. Otherwise, I was impressed with the culinary excellence. Leave a Comment

The Entrance to Szechuan Express by Rabbityama According to city and university polls, the Szechuan Express is one of the city's best Chinese restaurants, however, the food quality seems to have dropped a bit over the years. It is not bad, but not the best, either. The portions are quite large, though, so it is very filling. As advertised, the meals cost less than $6.00. This is typical of most Chinese restaurants. They offer a variety of dishes, many of them are the stereotypical dishes, such as General Tso's Chicken, but there are also Thai, Taiwanese, and Southeast Asian dishes, as well as many seafood options. The employees are very kind and they are constantly patrolling to make sure that the restaurant is clean. The atmosphere is pleasant. The music played here is never very intense, so it is quite relaxing. If you do not wish to sit and eat in the restaurant, they also have take-out. A nice fast stop for some good chinese/pan-asian food. Nothing too fancy, but the decor inside is one of a kind, very non asian with many huge black and white photos of noodles and ppl posing with them. The price was good enough for many local unversity students to visit often.
