Joe Mama's is kind of a throwback to the 1950's place with a diner feel and old black and white photos of actors and singers lining the walls. Their specialty is Italian food, but their bar was busy serving lots of American beer on the afternoon we arrived to get out of the cold. We just had some coffee and their french fries with rosemary... which were perfectly crispy and excellent. The waitress did an excellent job, and our coffee cups were always full.
Joe Mama's is frequented by Pitt students, local workers, and out-of-towners, so expect a little of everything. The restaurant occupies three floors, with the first floor being the main dining room and bar, the downstairs the restrooms and more dining space, and the upstairs seems like a party/banquet room.
Overall it is a fun little place with good food and service.
Traditional Italian food in a comfortable atmosphere. The restaurant is right next to the University of Pittsburgh, so don't be surprised to see many students between its walls. You can request that salad be served Olive Garden style to your party, along with the restaurant's fabulous breadsticks. There are two levels with a bar on the first floor. Reservations are not needed and there is a half-price menu for the later hours.
