PPG PLACE ICE RINK
We had a fun-filled time ice skating at the PPG rink last Christmas! This diamond-shaped 9,600 square foot rink is located in the middle of downtown Pittsburgh. A brilliantly lit 60 foot high Christmas tree sits majestically in the center of the rink, greeting skaters as they fly by. It was a brisk, snowy day when we put on skates to whirl around the rink last year. The atmosphere felt charged with excitement and imbued with a spirit of Christmas! The tree in the photo is this year's beauty!
Hours of operation are seasonal. The rink opens daily from 11 am-9pm Mon.-Thurs.; 11 am-10:30 pm Fri.-Sat.; 12 Noon -8 pm Sunday. Christmas Day hours at 2 pm-8 pm. The cost is $5.00 for adults; $4.00 for children and seniors--skate rental is $3.00. The rink is open through early March.

In the summertime, PPG Place is a great place just to sit, eat, and relax. There is a fountain around the central obelisk that is like a little water show. Children often like to come to play in the water.
In the wintertime, the fountain area is converted into an ice skating rink with a Christmas tree in the center. It's beautiful to look at, and of course, fun to skate outdoors right downtown! Inside is also where you'll find the Santas From Around the World exhibit, featuring Santas from the U.S., Haiti, all over Europe, and other countries!

The most striking thing about the Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG) Place is the light reflecting off the glass in all directions. It creates an unusual effect, especially at night. The fountain adds to the ambiance.
There is a lot of office space for lease here. See the website for more.
Pittsburgh Plate Glass Building - The PPG Complex
Pittsburgh is not a big city area wise. Its location at the conflux of three rivers leaves little room for expansion. So the city built up instead of out and created some beautiful skyscrapers. The PPG Place is the dominate skyscraper on the cities skyline. Its a beautiful series of towers made of glass that sparkles with the sunshine. PPG Place is a large building complex including a 40-story tower (635 feet) with five satellite buildings that cover a six city block area and was designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee.
Ice Skating at PPG Place
In the winter, you can go ice skating at an outdoor ice skating rink that is set up in a plaza within the PPG headquarters complex in downtown Pittsburgh. In the center of the rink is a large Christmas tree which adds to the festive atmosphere. Rental skates are available.

PPG looked like a huge Glass Castle
We saw it from a far driving around and it was walkable distance from our hotel. We did this in the morning so the sun was in a bad spot for the pictures ... wish we would have waited till around noon. The largest part is too tall to photograph when your in the square and the shorter buildings had the sun over then at a bad angle. But it was worth the walk and enjoyed seeing. Several were eating there lunch there. nice spot.
