The Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium is a great place for everyone, young and old! The Asian forest, Cheetah valley, Bears, and African Savannah are all outside. I especially like the African Savannah, because they have a large area where multiple animals may live together. It's as close as a zoo can get to establishing a real African savannah! The Tropical Forest contains the zoos monkeys, apes, gorillas, etc. The Aquarium contains a wide variety of aquatic animals from all around the world. The zoo has a large Kids Kingdom for children, which has some animals, such as seals, kangaroos, camels, and meerkats, but also offers a lot of fun learning activities.

When we went (1977) it was just "The Pittsburgh Municipal Zoo".

The Aquarium then meant Niagara Falls MarineLand not Pittsburgh.
So things have changed greatly for the better.

But even back then, the Pittsburgh Zoo was so much bigger, more impressive, more modern than either our Rochester Zoo or the one in Buffalo. Almost as good as the Bronx Zoo in New York City. And that hasn't changed.

A must-see if you are in Pittsburgh with the kids.

    Lions at the Pittsburgh Zoo

The Pittsburgh Zoo features animals from all over the world, including elephants, lions, tigers, ostriches, gorillas, monkeys, and bears. It will take you a few hours to see them all. The zoo also has an aquarium, which has dozens of sea creatures, including penguins, sharks, jellyfish, sea horses, an octupus, and plenty of different types of fish.

One warning: the Pittsburgh Zoo is built on very hilly land. If you are coming with small children, bring a stroller or rent one near the zoo entrance.

The Pittsburgh Zoo is truly enjoyable. Most habitats are set up for multiple views and the animals are actually pretty close due to some creative architecture (lots of deep pits between the animal and the public). It is a smaller zoo, but again, the way it is designed makes up for that. Reasonably priced, it is a great outing for a family or a couple looking for a unique way to spend the evening.

The PPG Aquarium (Pittsburgh Plate and Glass if you were wondering) is actually within the zoo, and costs no extra.

One of the finest zoos in the Northeast is the Pittsburgh Zoo. With over 6,000 animals, it is a must-see for families. Here are exhibits of animals from all over the world--Africa, the Amazon rain forest, North America, Asia, and elsewhere.

Pittsburgh has a small but well done zoo with a brand new aquarium exhibit. This zoo is well worth a couple of hours of time to visit.

This is a great zoo! The admission is very affordable ($8 per adult) and the exhibits are outstanding.
