Pittsburgh has a lot of neighborhoods that are fairly dangerous if you end up there late at night....here's some places to be careful in or avoid.... 1.) Oakland/Terrace Village/Middle Hill: Generally pretty safe....parts can be dangerous late at night despite being a college neighborhood 2.)Hill District/Downtown/Bluff - After the sun goes down this place can be very unfriendly 3.)East Liberty, Larimer 4.)Homewood/East Hills - There's lot's of crime and gang activity in this area. Bloods and Crips. Probably the most dangerous neighborhood in Pgh. Leave a Comment

Yes, there are places in every city that are not the best to stroll around in at 3 AM but Pittsburgh is absolutely NOT an extremely dangerous city. I've lived here over 20 years and have not felt threatened - ever. Not once. Leave a Comment

Pittsburgh is generally a very safe city, but it does have a few high-crime neighborhoods to avoid. These include the Hill District, which lies between downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland (the location of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie-Mellon University); Homewood, in eastern Pittsburgh; and Wilkinsburg, just east of Pittsburgh. I put this under local customs but I am reposting this under warnings just to make sure people know. :-) Ahhhh, the good ol' "Pittsburgh Left". So let me paint the scenario for you: You are waiting at a red light which you will be turning left at when it switches to green. Your green arrow does not appear, but green lights on both sides turn on. But...nobody moves? The guy in opposing traffic lanes is wondering why you are just sitting there...and you are wondering the same about him too. Here is the simple trick about the Pittsburgh left. Even if you do not have a green arrow, and the opposing traffic has a green light, you keep an eye out for the green light, and use your keen driving skills as well as years of honed instincts to predict the EXACT moment the lights will turn green. When it turns green...QUICK!! TURN LEFT!! That way you don't have to wait for allll that opposing traffic to pass through the intersection before you turn. All joking aside, this really is a phenomenon of driving in Pittsburgh and you do need to be aware of it. Many times drivers on opposing sides will wait another second or two for the first car in the opposing traffic lane to turn and do the "Pittsburgh Left". For the most part it is a common understanding amongst drivers. Keep it in mind when you are driving. People might be expecting the same treatment from you. Leave a Comment

I've lived in Pittsburgh my entire life, and I have never felt threatened in this city. Like all cities, you shouldn't walk around certain areas at 3am (Homewood, the Waterfront, Oakland). However, that is just common sense. During the day, you can walk almost anywhere without problems. Pittsburgh has a large number of colleges, so the college police patrols often. The area between the University of Pittsburgh and CMU is double-patrolled by the police of both colleges. Moreover, these areas have special security boxes that set off an alarm that reports directly to the police. Pittsburgh has quite a lot of homeless people on its streets. There are "nice" homeless people that I tend to give money to. Others can be rather aggressive at times. A few safety tips: 1 - Don't make eye contact or respond if they become aggressive. 2 - If they begin to follow you, keep moving and find a crowded area. They usually stop after a block or so. 3 - Don't taunt them. I've seen people be extremely cruel. You never want to provoke anything.

There are a group of people that rotate between 9th and Liberty and 5th and Forbes who mug anybody who displays any money I got mugged getting on the 67A at Forbes and 5th also... Wilkinsburgh on the east side of Pittsburgh and is not your average american suburb.. Wilkinsburgh is a filthy, violent and dangerous suberb which is not far from CMU and University of Pittsburgh, so if the Port Authority of Allegheny County Bus sign says Wilkinsburgh get of not far after you get past CMU or UP..... One last thing...Wilkinsburgh is filthy but the rest of Allegheny County(Pittsburgh) is very clean, central Pittsburgh around Liberty Square, the strip and CMU/UP is very clean compared to most downtowns Leave a Comment

Have never seen so many tailgaters. We'd shoot them in Texas. Just slow down and they get even closer. Scared the devil out of me for the 10 days that I drove a rental car there! Oh yeah, stay off Franklin Ave. in downtown Aliquippa. It looked like a war zone. Leave a Comment

The potholes and tunnels have been well represented in everyone's Pittsburgh pages. Taxi cabs are notoriously difficult to catch. Driving can be tricky as streets and directions are not always clearly marked. Leave a Comment

Always be aware of the many 'potholes' that pepper Pittsburgh's roadways, they'll tear a car apart sometimes. Also, prepare your driving paths and always get good directions because Pittsburgh's direction and street signs aren't all that helpful. Leave a Comment
