Gring's Mill is a large park that the Schulkyll River runs through. This park was actually named for my Grandmother's family, who used to own the land until it was taken by eminent domain. It features a gravel bike/walking trail that is about 3 miles long. There is a covered bridge along the way, along with grassy areas and pavilions for picnics or reunions, and play areas for children. When I was a child I went here with my family, and I remember that there were locks that were still in existence at the western most side of the park, but I'm not sure if they're still there.
The Pagoda is a rather unique and interesting destination in the Berks County area. Located overlooking Reading's downtown on a mountain East of the city, it was originally built as a hotel. It never opened, and has become a landmark and point of interest for those passing through. At night, it is lit with red neon lights, which make it appear to be floating in the sky. I live about 9 miles from the city, and I can see it if I stand in the middle of my street. It now contains a gift shop that I have never been in because it always seems to be closed. But it's still pretty cool to drive up the mountain, full of switchbacks and lined by a crumbling stone wall, to see it up close. There are also nice views of the city from up there. The view of the city from the mountain may be preferable to the up close view, I'm sorry to say. If you are going to be in the area or even traveling through, I would recommend taking the drive up to The Pagoda.
Reading is famous, naturally, for their outlets. The two major outlet centers here in Reading are the VF Factory Outlets and the Reading Outlet Center. There's also the Hiesters Lane outlets, Morgantown Furniture outlets, and then a short drive to the Tanger Outlet Center and Rockvale Square in Lancaster... ahhh, I could go ON...
PA has no state tax on clothing, so it's easy to take a tax refund and blow your way through it at the outlets. (Oh yeah - be sure to hit Reading China and Glass, located in Designers' Place at the VF outlets.)
Lil' secret: Both of the major outlet centers here in Reading have coupon books at their visitor's information centers. They could save you an obscene amount of money if they're used right!
