    fairly safe

by davecallahan Updated Apr 18, 2007

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Scranton rates as less risky versus an average American city of similar size.
There is typically only one murder per year.
There are however 30-40 rapes, 70-80 robberies, 90-100 assaults. So violent crime happens here. Non-violent crimes happen more frequently: 500 burglaries, 1700 thefts. But these are typically not against tourists.
There are 91 sex offenders registered for the municipality of Scranton, PA.
(if you are interested in getting details about these people, try the website below)

So, to reduce your chances for being a target for violent crimes, use some common sense approaches: lock doors in your car and your hotel room; put valuables in a safe place (money belt or hotel safe); don't go to unfamiliar parts of town alone or late at night; ask the hotel staff which area tourists should avoid.

Be safe and have a nice Scranton visit.

    A working railroad yard

by annk Written Jan 17, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Even though this is a National Park, it is still an operating railroad yard. Visitors are advised to watch out for moving trains and vehicles. Besides seasonal train excursions offered from Steamtown, the tracks are used daily for passenger and freight trains.

    ski lift

by Rhondaj Written Feb 9, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When the ski lift lines get long, a lift worker will manage the lines to help keep order and the lifts full. (putting singles with doubles on a triple lift for example). But the lifts are incredibly SLOW compared to lifts at other nearby ski resorts.

    empty lifts in the morning!
