by traveldave Home of the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins, Mellon Arena opened in 1961, at which time it was called the Civic Arena. The name was changed in 1999 when the Pittsburgh Penguins entered into an agreement to rename the facility after the Pittsburgh-based Mellon Bank.
In addition to hockey, the 17,000-seat Mellon Arena hosts other sporting events such as boxing matches, figure skating championships, and basketball. Large-scale concerts, ice shows, circuses, and other events are also held in the arena.
