What seems like just another of the ubiquitous College Avenue stores which sells all things pertaining to Penn State, McLanahan's Student Store & Penn State Room has another draw -- especially for students. If you are or have been a Penn State student, you've probably shopped here because it is apparently one of the few stores close to campus which also stocks some groceries, snacks, and personal items.
McLanahan's Penn State paraphernalia prices are at least competitive with other stores along College Ave., but when it comes to grocery and personal items, students (and the public) really get gouged IMHO!! For example, charging $4 + for a box of tissues. Seriously??? You'll find similar price markups on other items. Unfortunately many students have no choice but to do at least some shopping here because it is close to campus, and stores such as Walmart where prices are less expensive are more difficult to reach without a car. Granted, it's the students' choice to shop here -- but I object to the price gouging!
In addition to grocery and personal care items, the store's "Penn State Room" sells about anything and everything to do with Penn State from clothing to flags, banners, graduation gifts, diploma frames, gifts, tailgating and party supplies, etc., etc. They have an online catalog as well in case you've forgotten that one thing you can't live without.
NOTE: There is also McLanahan's Downtown Market, located at 116 S. Allen Street, which is open 7 days a week from 7:30a.m. to 10:00p.m. It claims to be State College's only full-service grocery store serving the public. Opened in 2002, it is slightly further from campus but carries a full line of grocery items, health & beauty products, a full deli of meats and cheeses, bakery items, freshly brewed coffee, Fair Trade organic items, take-away freshly prepared food items such as wraps, sushi, and more. Prices on their event catering menu DO LOOK reasonable.

What to buy: McLanahan's Student Store & Penn State Room sells the full line of university logo emblazoned clothing, accessories and keepsakes which other stores on College Avenue also sell. If you are in desperate need of small groceries items, snacks, sandwiches, etc., you can find them here.
What to pay: Be prepared to pay more for grocery and personal items here than elsewhere. If possible, drive or take the bus to Walmart!! I'm all for independent businesses, but prices here are indecent, especially for students.
