There's now a substantial arched bridge over the Susquehanna, which I found rather beautiful in winter.

Towanda nestles within a narrow gorge like valley with the bottom being the Susquehanna River, and Main Street winding along it. I recommend stopping to window shop among the antique stores, the well stocked local hardware store, the Red Rose Diner, County Courthouse, and the Keystone Theater. These are mostly early 19th century commercial brick buildings, with some decorative patters on their facades. These images taken with my iPhone are little grainy because I did this walk after dusk.

The owner of this place purchased it because of the authentic diner car architecture. Originally, these were sold as something of a franchise, and considering the layout, it's hard to imagine the development of modern corporate restaurants like McDonald's and Denny's. These were restaurants for working people, able to produce food quickly for breakfast and lunch, with a kitchen that lined behind a bar with bar stools. This particular diner has a real sliding door entrance, a curved ceiling that finished off with lots of oak trim, and a telephone that still works. The service is really good, as the conversation with locals invariably centers on the diner itself. The food is adequate enough given the modest quality one tends to find within this corner of the northeast USA. The homemade pies are worth eating, for sure. Free WIFI is available, which is a big plus because Towanda's cell phone reception isn't very good.

Take the winding route of US 6 north from Wilkes-Barre or Scranton. But, Towanda can also be reached from Binghamton, New York, via Athens off I-81 and I-86 west to US 220 south. US220 north from Muncy, PA off I-180 is also a possibility. Anyway one goes, the roads will wind a lot through the mountains.
