    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Leonard Harrison State Park is on the east side of Pine Creek Gorge, or better known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. It is the most frequently visited side of the Grand Canyon. Here you can get the best panaramic view of the Grand Canyon.

Colton Point State Park is located on the western side of Pine Creek Gorge, better known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. This is a less visited part of the Grand Canyon area. There are a couple of nice vantage points in this area. Very spectacular in the fall.

    THE Fire Station

    by straz135 Written May 14, 2010

You don't have to be a fire nut to enjoy this huge fire station. Featured in several firefighting periodicals Wellsboro has been given the nickname "Firetown USA." It is rare that no one is around the all volunteer station but even if you are just walking by the enormous bay door windows just grab your attention. Take a walk past the five engines, ladder and Snorkel trucks and a Rescue that is as big as any big city's. Upstairs (yes, they use a pole to come down) is a meeting room and historical archive and library that is a day trip in itself. Oh, and by the way the volunteer ambulance got too big to stay in the station so they built across the street. Just a fun place to visit. Kid friendly tours available. Evenings and nights are the best time to catch someone there but during the day the borough office is in the same building so you could enter from there.

  • Touring in and around Wellsboro, PA

by athomeinwellsboro Updated Apr 9, 2009

For a small town, we have lots of transportation opportunites. You can hop on Tony's Trolley and ride to PA Grand Canyon or out to the Junction where you can take a ride on the Tioga Central Railroad's excursion train. Or you can head out Route 6 towards Ansonia and ride take a Covered Wagon or horseback Ride through the canyon with Nature Quest... or ride your bicycle along the rails to trails... or hike through the various trails along the canyon. Or you can sign your motorcycle group up for a guided tour of the area with Canyon Vista Motorcycle Tours. All their tours start and stop in Wellsboro. Or you can take yourself on the self guided walking tour of Wellsboro's Historic residential area. Read about all of these on the Wellsboro Chamber's web site

    COLTON POINT STATE PARK

by mtncorg Written Oct 1, 2008

Colton Point State Park protects some 368 acres along the west rim of the Pine Creek Gorge. You reach the park via a 5 mile paved road that winds through the trees starting in Ansonia which US 6 runs through. The park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1933 and 1936. There are a few rustic campsites at the park and several large open-air pavilions for group picnics, as well. Several trails extend into the woods atop the Point, though most visitors will probably simply drive to a couple of the car park overlooks to snap a few pictures. The first viewpoint is arguably the best, some 650 feet above Pine Creek. From the viewpoints at the end of the Point, you have a nice straight look across the Gorge to the viewpoint on the east rim at Leonard Harrison State Park.

    LEONARD HARRISON STATE PARK

by mtncorg Written Oct 1, 2008

Located at the end of PA 660 on the east rim of Pine Creek Gorge some ten miles west of Wellsboro, Leonard Harrison State Park was originally developed from land owned by local Wellsboro businessman Leonard Harrison who gave the land to the State in 1922. The CCC further developed the Park in the mid-1930's at the same time they were busy with Colton Point on the other rim. The huge parking lot, gift shop, and visitor center all point to the possibility of a lot more visitors present than the day that I visited. The main viewpoint from atop the east rim is a gorgeous one over the canyon and at Colton Point on the other side. Another short - 0.5 mile - trail takes you to another viewpoint - Overlook Trail.

    TURKEY PATH

by mtncorg Written Oct 1, 2008

The Turkey Path is a 2.5 mile trail that links the west rim at Colton Point with the east rim at Leonard Harrison - Pennsylvania’s equivalent to the Bright Angel - North Kaibab Trails. There are some small waterfalls encountered in side canyons on both sides of Pine Creek on the ascent/descent. At the bottom, there is no bridge across Pine Creek, so a wet crossing is assured. Sandals and hiking poles make the going easier.

    Tioga County Courthouse

    by chewy3326 Written May 2, 2006

Wellsboro is the Tioga County seat, and has the very elegant-looking Tioga County Courthouse. While there's not much to do there, it's an interesting sight to stop at for a few minutes.
