According to the crime statistics report, York, PA has nearly twice the crime rate as the average American city.
These are the annual figures:
11 murders, 40 rapes, 90 assaults, 225 robberies, 250 auto thefts, 2200 thefts/burglaries.
I was totally surprised to learn that there are nearly 200 sexual offenders registered for the municipality of York, PA. Given the size of the population, that would mean that if you bumped into 200 people on the streets or in the shops in York, then you touched a sex offender. That is not a happy thought.
Be careful of who is around you or watching you during your visit to York. If kids are traveling with you, then be sure they are properly supervised.
(for more information on these SOs, see the website below).
Keep car doors locked. Use the latch-chain on the motel room door when you are there.
Put all valuables in the motel safe. Wear a money belt and only keep a minimum in your wallet. Don't be flashy; don't act like a tourist; blend in to the local genre.
Don't go to unfamilar places alone or late at night. Get information from the motel staff on which areas to avoid.
These actions will help minimize your risks.

Driving on some PA roads can be dangerous. I-83 between York and Harrisburg, PA has really short exit and entrance ramps so use caution while entering and exiting the highways. Also, may sections of I-83 North of York do not have large medians and truck traffic and be moderate to heavy. Exercise caution while driving, especially while passing tractor trailors.
