Chili's: Chili's

by b1bob

Since Chilis is just as omnipresent as Applebees and Ruby Tuesdays, you might be surprised that my first go of Chilis was during a long layover at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. Because of irregularities in my flight back from Quito, the customer service representative put me on a flight leaving 4 hours after I arrived. As a result, she also threw in a $12 meal voucher. She specifically recommended this restaurant because it was the only one in that terminal where I could sit comfortably. It should be noted that this was a Chilis Too, a smaller version of the Chilis restaurants you see all across the fruited plain. My first go of a standard Chili's came a few years later and not far from my house. A friend from out of town took me there. Just before my first go, I had been eating everything but the kitchen sink in Ecuador (not to mention the horrible airline food), I decided...

the great American cookout: the cheapest alternative can be a great one

by richiecdisc

The USA is not a cheap place to travel. Some forgo a trip here just because of the potential considerable cost. Fortunately, the very best this country has to offer is not insanely expensive. The country's true treasures are its National Parks. Nowhere in the world are there as many nor are they as well maintained. The best part is they are also among the cheapest in the world to visit. Eating in the parks can be pricey but there are always places to picnic or cook out even if you are not camping. The parks were made for families and to keep costs down, they provided these great spots which are not only cheap but also set in incredibly beautiful spots. You can cook typical BBQ fare or just bring along some cheese and bread for a quick picnic. You choose what you like and eat when you like. Enjoy the food and the saving too. Maybe you can afford that USA trip after all!

how about In & Out Burger or Dick': not all fast foods are created equal

by richiecdisc

While I'm not a regular eater of fast food, love it or hate it, it is one of the big exponents of American cuisine. While the hamburger and hot dog have their antecedents in Germany, they surely became cult items here and look no further than icon McDonald's to realize their worldwide popularity. What few people today realize is there was fast food before McDonald's and it was better too. Some of them are still around so seek them out if looking for an authentic American eating experience. Check out Dick's in Seattle or In & Out Burger in California. Check my individual pages for details in areas you might be traveling. Like I said, it's not my forte but I do eat in the great ones if they are on the map I am currently traveling on. Burgers made from fresh meat, not frozen. Fresh cut fries from real potatoes. Milk shakes made with milk and ice cream, not a powder. Yum.

the many great brewpubs of the USA: looking for food? look for beer.

by richiecdisc

Few realize what a Mecca of great beer the United States is since many are only exposed to the mass-produced crap that are most popular but make no mistake about it, the US has some great beer. You just have to know where to look for it. A lot of my travel is specifically for beer and even when it's not, if there is a good brewery in the area of where I will be, I find it. Within my individual pages, you will find a wealth of information of beer, places to drink it, and the food that is served with it. Many people on VT has taunted me to write a book on beer. Well, I have. It's right here on VT. Enjoy the fruits of my labor. I sure enjoyed doing the research! From cask-conditioned ales, to Germanic lagers, and Belgian styles as well, America has a beer to suit all palates. None other than the late great Michael Jackson (not the singer, ladies, the beer guru) said that nowhere in the...

Golden Corral: help yourself to happiness

by b1bob

Golden Corral is a chain of steakhouses across many states. It was founded in North Carolina round about 1973. My first experience with it was in the early 1980s on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and in Emporia, Virginia on the way to it. Over the years as it has expanded, it has become more of a buffet place. As a result, I didn't know whether to classify this as a steakhouse or a buffet. I had the all-you-can-eat buffet and when I do that, I get my money's worth. They have wide selections at their salad bar, you can order steak to your liking in the meat section, and there is a dessert bar where bread is baked fresh daily. When I was there, they were baking cinnamon bread and the heavenly aroma even overtook that of steaks on the grill.

Baron supermarket: American beer in... Poland

by matcrazy1

Before my trip to the USA unexpectadly I found American beer in the very close to my flat supermarket: Miller Genuine Draft beer in bottles - quite good haha, I bought 4 bottles and I gave free CD (promotion). The beer costs 3.3 zl for a small bottle = $ 0.82. How much is it in the USA? .

KFC: COLONEL HARLAND SANDERS

by DAO

COLONEL HARLAND DAVID SANDERS – AMERICAN HERO.Harland Sanders tried and failed at many jobs all the way into his 40’s. He was a soldier, railroad fireman, steamboat driver, insurance salesman, farmer and much later a cook. He worked hard and never gave up trying to become a success. In 1930 he ran a gas station (petrol garage) in Corbin Kentucky and began to cook for travellers. His experiments with spices and pressure cookers led to chicken that was cooked faster and is "finger lickin' good"! His cooking became so popular it has become a global phenomenon. Often imitated but never successfully copied, his Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants now serve people from 32,500 locations in more than 100 countries and territories. He was made a Colonel of Kentucky in 1935 – the state’s highest honour. They just don’t make ‘em like the Colonel anymore. His original restaurant (pictured) in Corbin...

Captain D's Seafood Kitchen: Fast Seafood

by grandmaR

Captain D's offers seafood at fast food prices, and more than just fish and chips. They do have the famous hand batter-dipped fish fillets (also available Country Style) with hush puppies and your choice of 2 sides, but they also have fried catfish, chicken and shrimp, coconut shrimp and seasoned tilapia or salmon with your choice of scampi, ginger teriyaki, or sweet chili sauce served on a bed of rice with a breadstick. There is also a deluxe seafood platter which includes two classic batter dipped fish fillets, 4 premium breaded shrimp, 2 seafood stuffed crab shells, hush puppies and a choice of 2 sides. The franchise operation started in Donelson, TN in 1969 and was called Mr. D's. Now they have almost 600 restaurants in 23 states and several countries overseas. I had the new Pasta Bowl but I think I'd also like the coconut shrimp. Bob had Fish and Fries Combo ($3.99). We did not...
