Islamorada Fish Company: A taste of the Florida Keys

by b1bob

The Islamorada Fish Company is at a bunch of Bass Pro Shops across the country that recreates the experience of eating at an oceanfront restaurant in south Florida. While the seafood isn't as fresh or locally caught in the other locations and you can't watch the fishing boats come in with the day's haul, they do their best to capture the spirit of the Keys even if it's mid-autumn in Virginia with a brisk wind outside. On a return trip in the summer, a friend and I got a chance to enjoy the patio on a mild evening. Conch (Key West native) and Caribbean music was played to set the tone. A 30-foot (9 m.) vaulted ceiling, trophy saltwater mounts, hand-painted murals and pictures, add to the relaxing aquatic atmosphere their 12000 gallon saltwater aquarium provides. The menu offers a wide range of appetisers and seafood with a few things for people who are keen to stick to food from dry land....

Longhorn Steakhouse: The west as they know it

by b1bob

I start out sceptical of chain restaurants and more so chain steakhouses. Because I can get steak better than most restaurants at home, it takes a great deal for a restaurant steak to impress me. Long Horn Steakhouse is relatively new to the Richmond area. The one nearest me opened at the Shops at White Oak in the east end. The restaurant was decorated in "early Wyoming road house" (see the 2d photo). In their defence, my first go was on a Friday night and it was busy, so that explains why our waitress wasn't always here. I had the Outlaw Ribeye which was an 18 ounce (510 g.) steak with a light rub. It came with a salad and baked potato. The steak impressed because it was perfectly cooked (extra medium) and the rub did not overpower the meat. The baked potato was also great. My one beef with the steakhouse was that they put too much dressing on the salad, drowning the vegetables. Next...

Los Banditos: Mexican Restaurants

by hunterV

One day the faculty of the school where I had my internship invited me to dinner.Fifteen members of the school faculty were present. It was my first visit to a Mexican restaurant. The nachos (chips with melted cheese and green peppers with meat) tasted great! The cheesecake was delicious!Chimichanga ( your choice of chicken, shredded beef, pork or seafood rolled with onions and cheese in a large flour tortilla and deep-fried golden brown).

Mimi's Cafe: the purple awnings seemed to say "come on in"

by b1bob

Normally, I'm not keen on purple in any context, but this restaurant along West Broad Street in Glen Allen had these purple awnings which stood out like a fly on a wedding cake. The theme was inspired by the founder's father's memorable time in Europe during WWII. He named Mimi's Cafe after a remarkable French woman. Once I got inside, I found that Mimi's was a national chain across 22 states currently owned by the Bob Evans people. They intend for each location to be colourful and have a French cottage theme with outdoor dining. The first Mimi's Cafe opened in Anaheim, California in 1978. On walking in on this French cottage theme particularly in the West End, I thought, "Good Lord, the prices must be through the roof!" I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the prices were. We had great and attentive service from Dee, our waitress. Once we were served, the portions almost had ME...

McDonalds: THE MCDONALD BROTHERS

by DAO

It’s all a lot of Kroc. Seriously, just look at the McDonalds website and it’s a few paragraphs in before they bother to mention the McDonald brothers. McDonalds restaurant is the most successful restaurant in the history of the world. It has been the first job for many successful people, including me. It was originally founded by Dick and Mac McDonald in San Bernardino, California (who names their kid Mac McDonald?). They cooked hamburgers and quickly. They originated fast food. Ray Kroc sold milk shake makers and eventually bought them out. His story is all over the McDonalds website. What ever became of the McDonald brothers? Who knows. Ronald McDonald – a clown – showed up in 1963. Was Ray having a laugh at someone’s expense? Well he had the last laugh and died rich in 1984.I can remember a long time ago that Consumer Reports found most people preferred other fast food places taste...

Red Lobster: Red Lobster

by b1bob

Red Lobster is a chain of seafood restaurant and rather good at that. My first go of Red Lobster was when I was pushing 9 on the way to Disney World in Savannah. I was keen on those little bitty popcorn shrimp. I ate a good many that meal, but they put the rest in a takeaway box I munched on later that evening in the hotel room. A couple years later, Red Lobster opened in Richmond. For many years, the two locations were West Broad Street in the West End and Midlothian Turnpike on Southside. In early 2009, a third opened in Richmond's east side at the (then) new White Oak Village shopping centre. When one thinks of American chain restaurants, one thinks cheap, fast food, lacking in imagination. Red Lobster is middling priced and does offer some ambiance. You will get better seafood closer to the coast where it is more likely to be fresh, but this is overall a good place. I don't mind...

Qdoba Mexican Grill: an idea whose time had come

by b1bob

Qdoba got its start in the mid 1990s in Denver and became famous across Denver, the state of Colorado, and later the whole of the United States for its burritos. This is fast food, but it's not the same combination platter item with the obligatory Spanish rice and refried beans. In its first few years there were 400 locations across the Fruited Plain. In 2003, Jack in the Box bought out the original owners. I like the chicken burrito with fresh grilled chicken marinated in adobo spices, with black beans, and roasted chile corn salsa. The portions seemed greater than at similar type restaurants (Moe's and Chipotle). I was disappointed with the corn chips and the tomatillo salsa that came with them.

Piccadilly Cafeteria: where the school lunchroom meets the food court

by b1bob

Piccadilly Cafeteria is a chain of cafeterias which turn up predominantly in shopping malls across the South from Maryland through to Texas. When David and I visited Southpark Mall in November, 2008, I hadn't seen a Piccadilly Cafeteria around here since the late 1970s at the (now defunct) Cloverleaf Mall and at Raleigh's Crabtree Valley Mall. This was actually just what the doctor ordered for David and me after a day's worth of touring. We didn't have lunch, but we knew we were going to have supper at a certain time, so we needed something light to tide us over. I dreaded the prospect of the cuisine de food court which is usually a long menu of inferiour options. The food here is like you would expect at any cafeteria: flavourful, but not anything that stands out. When I was younger, I would get the spaghetti with the ginormous meatballs. This time, I got some pinto beans and a salad.

Texas Steakhouse & Saloon: Not in Texas

by grandmaR

Texas Steakhouse & Saloon has restaurants in North Carolina, Virginia and west Virginia. Not in Texas. Their website does not tell me anything about their history. It just says:Ask a Texan to tell you what they do better than folks from other parts of the country and you better pull up a chair because they're going to be talking for a while. But even if your roots don't extend to Dallas, or Houston, or El Paso or Amarillo or anyplace else in Texas, you'll have to admit that there's one thing Texans do that beats the pants off of anywhere else: Cook a great steak. Nobody's quite sure when it started. Perhaps it came from the cowboys and ranchers who had to spend more than a few dinners over a glowing campfire with a great piece of meat. Whatever the origin, all we know is that an open flame and a succulent piece of beef still make it a hard to beat meal. That's the inspiration behind our...
