The statue of Rebecca (named for the biblical Rebekah-at-the-well), stands proudly at the intersection of four Old Harbor roads. she was erected in 1896 by the local Women's Christian Temperance Movement, which hoped to curb the consumption of alcahol on Block Island. Ironically, restoration experts have concluded that Rebecca is in fact Hebe, cupbearere to the Gods, which may explain why tea-totalling never caught on, at least not here on BI. The statue was recast in 2001.

We aren't into big beaches with hundreds of people, so we choose the more secluded areas just below one of the hotels in town.

Block Island is located off the coast of Rhode Island. It takes about an hour to get there on the slow ferry from Point Judith. Unless you are staying for an extended time or have rented a house away...
No traffic jams (hardly any cars), no private beaches..... So far no movie moguls or vacationing presidents like nearby Martha's Vineyard. Most visitors are more interested in scenery than in a trendy...
I usually jump the Block Island Ferry at Point Judith/Galilee and when we arrived it smelled to high heaven. I can only assume since it didn't have just the usual odor of the numerous commercial...
Located 12 short miles off the coast, Block Island seems light years away...the perfect weekend escape with the family, or someone special.
