It's a great ride... blustery, but you can go below deck if you get chilly. My father used to love to take the ferry to Block Island and back... didn't care about the island... just the ride.
Folks stand at the rail in the beginning and ending of the ride, but settle into reading or snoozing or snacking during the one hour ride on the traditional ferry.
There is a large traditional ferry which we used on our way to the island this time, and then there is a fast ferry, which we used on our way home. It takes half the time (1/2 hr). Coming into the harbour on the ferry is such a beautiful sight.
At the end of the day trip or weekend...travellers line up for the ferry ride home. Pretty long lines in the summer. But everyone is pretty relaxed by the time they head off island.
The end of a wonderful, warm mini-vacation for day trippers.
Hi-Speed Fast-Ferry...non-stop passenger service from Montauulk, NY to Block Island and to New London, Ct. 631/668-5700
The ferry terminal in Galilee:
There are two ways of getting to Block Island: take a ferry or fly a plane. Ferries can be caught from Providence, Newport, Galilee, New London, CT or Montauk on NY's Long Island.
The island is not more than 3 miles wide anywhere. There are numerous bicycle & moped rental places. The island is actually small enough to explore on foot.
We went to BI on a perfect day and the ferry ride was very smooth. We took the "slow" ferry - about an hour ride from Point Judith, at $19.45 per person roundtrip (same day) (quite a bit more than the $15.15 quoted in the brochure). This ferry comes into the Old Harbor area of Block Island. There is also at least one high speed ferry that comes into Old Harbor, a 30 minute trip at $29.85 pp according to the brochure. (Most of the high speed ferries go to New Harbor, the other side of the island.) Be sure to check the schedules as they change seasonally and also daily (fewer runs Tues, Wed, Thur when we went) and be sure not to miss the last ferry back to the mainland!
For half the cost of the high speed ferry, adding only 30 minutes to the trip, you can take this ferry.

Such a cute little airport... reminds me of that television show: 'Wings', that was based in nearby Nantucket
New England airlines offers hourly flights (12 minutes long) from Westerly, RI. You know I love to fly, but I say take the ferry, it's a better experience....
