    the local hot spot

by Pawtuxet Written Jan 2, 2008

George's is a restaurant but you might not know that if you get there when the bikers are in town and all the young folks are tipping their bottles on the deck with music blasting and the afternoon sun gleaming off the beach. It's a favorite spot with great views out to the beach and the channel where the Block Island ferry comes and goes. People on the ferry wave and the folks at the bar or beach or sitting on the rocks wave back.
If you land in Galilee, be sure to tip a cold one at George's and check out the bathing beauty crowd.

    Block Island Ferry depot

The ferry to Block Island leaves out of Galilee. It makes a great day trip with a ferry ride that takes about an hour or so. When you come back at the end of the day, you could stop in for a beer in one of the Galilee watering holes. Or... just enjoy passing through and take a few days out on the island. Anyway you do it, you buy your tickets at this little building and sail out the channel... waving, of course, to the folks on the beach.

    Beach, boats, rocks, fishing, whatever...

Gaililee and Sand Hill Cove are next to one another. From Gaililee you can take a ferry to Block Island, visit some great sea food restaurants, or walk this wonderful sandy beach. There are fishing trips which you can book....or buy fresh lobsters and other sea food to take home. Some folks rent a cabin nearby and spend the week. Sand Hill Cove has a state beach with facilities for the kids, showers and snack bar. If you are into the salt and the sand...here is the place to be. Also not far from Narragansett Pier where they do some surfing. So many miles of shoreline...some protected, some not....some rocky, some sandy.....search around and find the one you want.

    Ferry out to the island!

Here is a pic of some of the fleet that sails to Block Island. There is a high speed ferry in operation now as well. Doesn't seem as romantic or leisurely as the traditional ferry.

It's fun to watch all the various sizes and shapes of boats arriving at the end of the day. Some are pleasure craft, some fishing boats... some at work, some at play... all with seagulls happy to greet them.

THE place to go for fresh lobster

by gosiaPL Written Sep 27, 2006
    Ah, lobster... you start with...

Having a meal at Champlin's Seafood is really the thing to do in Galilee. I mean REALLY! The place has veen voted the Best Fish and also the Best Lobster & Best Lobster Roll by a Rhode Island's monthly readers. As I point out in my restaurant tip, it's a casual place, you order your food at the counter and then bring it yourself to the table. I got a kick out of this, it was so much like the fish restaurant we have in Poland on the Baltic coast! Made me feel at home :-) Click for the other pictures in this tip to get a feel for the place.
Janet and her husband had fun teaching me how to eat lobster and I had a big time doing this. Once you get used to the melted butter running down your chin, you're OK :-) It's funny how many websites give you instructions on how to eat lobster! :-)

    Nice sandy beaches

Picnic tables on the beach by the canal
    1 more image

Gailee's beaches have quiet waters, they are perfect for families with kids. They are also favourite for picnics right on the sand or on the grassy areas. There are three:
    1) Scarborough Beach on Ocean Road is called a jewel of R.I. beaches. It has a beach-side boardwalk, a large bathhouse and many pavilions. A favourite for picnics!
    2) Salty Brine State Beach by the breachway in Galilee is not very big but it's a great spot to watch the ships coming in.
    3) Roger Wheeler State Beach on Sand Hill Cove Road near Galilee is sheltered by the Point Judith Breakwater. It's a favourite for families with small children as it has a playground for kids.

I came to the beach in the evening after the lobster dinner at Champlin's. I couldn't resist walking on the sand :-)

    Fishing in Galilee

by gosiaPL Updated Sep 27, 2006
    Fishing on the canal

The breachway, or the canal, is the best place for fishing. The place is totally enjoyable, you can fish, watch the boats coming in and out, have your picnic or take-away at one of the tables...
You can also go deep sea fishing for full day or half a day, whatever suits you. Or you may go on a whale watching tour, how about that? Head for the State Pier in Galilee to take off from there. Also check Rhode Island Party & Charter Boat Association website for details.

    Houses in Galilee

by gosiaPL Written Sep 27, 2006
    Houses on Galilee's waterfront

I haven't seen much of Galilee's architecture but I liked the houses across the canal. I understand they are getting more and more expensive with Galilee getting so popular. I don't think I could afford living on Rhode Island's waterfront but I really fell for New England's architecture. It feels so cosy and comfortable!

    Visit Block Island

by gosiaPL Updated Apr 4, 2011
    The mouth of the canal

I didn't take the trip to Block Island but I hope to do it some day. I only watched the ferries from the beach near the canal. There's a new high speed ferry service that will charge you about $32 (adult fee) for the same day round trip. The traditional ferry is at half the price. The service is available all year round, parking is also available. Check the Block Island Ferry website for details to plan your trip.

There are plenty of T shirt stands and shops with an assortment of beach wear and various trinkets and soulvenirs. Guess it adds to the flavor of a beach community.

While you are sitting there with butter running down your arm... you feel as if the ferry is going to be in the middle of the dining room any minute. Fascinating. Great views.
