Galilee Things to Do

  • Remember to wave !!

What is it about ferry boats and big ships? Everyone feels compelled to wave from shore to ship and back again? Tradition? You don't have to know the people, just "Bon voyage!"

  • Visit Block Island

I didn't take the trip to Block Island but I hope to do it some day. I only watched the ferries from the beach near the canal. There's a new high speed ferry service that will charge you about $32 (adult fee) for the same day round trip. The traditional ferry is at half the price. The service is available all year round, parking is also available....

  • Champlin's has its special entertainment

While you are sitting there with butter running down your arm... you feel as if the ferry is going to be in the middle of the dining room any minute. Fascinating. Great views.

  • Boats and birds

It's fun to watch all the various sizes and shapes of boats arriving at the end of the day. Some are pleasure craft, some fishing boats... some at work, some at play... all with seagulls happy to greet them.

  • Ferry out to the island!

Here is a pic of some of the fleet that sails to Block Island. There is a high speed ferry in operation now as well. Doesn't seem as romantic or leisurely as the traditional ferry.check the schedules here:Block Island Ferry

  • Walk the beach... or lay in the sun

Gaililee and Sand Hill Cove are next to one another. From Gaililee you can take a ferry to Block Island, visit some great sea food restaurants, or walk this wonderful sandy beach. There are fishing trips which you can book....or buy fresh lobsters and other sea food to take home. Some folks rent a cabin nearby and spend the week. Sand Hill Cove...

  • Everybody is out to make a buck

There are plenty of T shirt stands and shops with an assortment of beach wear and various trinkets and soulvenirs. Guess it adds to the flavor of a beach community.

  • Block Island Ferry depot

The ferry to Block Island leaves out of Galilee. It makes a great day trip with a ferry ride that takes about an hour or so. When you come back at the end of the day, you could stop in for a beer in one of the Galilee watering holes. Or... just enjoy passing through and take a few days out on the island. Anyway you do it, you buy your tickets at...

  • the local hot spot

George's is a restaurant but you might not know that if you get there when the bikers are in town and all the young folks are tipping their bottles on the deck with music blasting and the afternoon sun gleaming off the beach. It's a favorite spot with great views out to the beach and the channel where the Block Island ferry comes and goes. People...

  • Nice sandy beaches

Gailee's beaches have quiet waters, they are perfect for families with kids. They are also favourite for picnics right on the sand or on the grassy areas. There are three:1) Scarborough Beach on Ocean Road is called a jewel of R.I. beaches. It has a beach-side boardwalk, a large bathhouse and many pavilions. A favourite for picnics!2) Salty Brine...

  • Houses in Galilee

I haven't seen much of Galilee's architecture but I liked the houses across the canal. I understand they are getting more and more expensive with Galilee getting so popular. I don't think I could afford living on Rhode Island's waterfront but I really fell for New England's architecture. It feels so cosy and comfortable!

Galilee Restaurants

  • Seafood at the Beach

Champlin's is a Rhode Island tradition. People in the RI go to this restaurant and George's Restaurant across the street for fresh seafood and to watch the boats enter and leave the Great Salt Pond. The restaurant is actually located in the area called Galilee right next to the boat channel into the pond. On the other side of the channel is...

  • Another local favourite

I didn't try this one but I imagine the menu is as big as Champlin's, after all both these restaurants serve all the fresh seafood that the ocean provides. I noticed it also has an upper porch (or deck?) so you can eat while watching the boats and Block Island ferries coming in, although it is a bit off the canal while the Champlin's is right on...

  • Delicious fresh lobster

Champlin's Seafood restaurant is right on the canal. It's a casual traveler's place, nothing fancy: you order your food at the counter and then take it yourself to the table of your choice. Sit on the upper outdoor deck, and you will love the place! You will have great views of the boats passing right by you while you have the freshest seafood you...

Galilee Off The Beaten Path

  • Drive the old coastal road

You can drive a coastal road from Galillee thru Narragansett and Wickford and all the way up to Pawtuxet Village, if you like. down in the beach area there are some wonderful old homes overlooking the ocean... some are more palatial than others. This fairly modest house (for the neighborhood) may have a gated entry left over from grander days....

  • Wonderful veggies at a quaint farm stand

Watch for this farm stand as you enter (or leave Galillee). along the road you'll see the sign. The farm is owned by the state and there is a lucky family who gets to live in the big old house and tend to the farm. They get to sell the vegetables they grow. They also make delicious preserves and home baked pies! When you stop in, you'll notice a...
