The Black Pearl: Looking for classic New England chowder?

The Black Pearl is one of the oldest restaurants in Newport. Appropriate for lunch, it is located literally on the docks at the harbor...in the Brick Market Place. The chowder is an all time favorite of those who have visited many times. You may have a glass of wine with your lunch. The entire menu is delightful.

Favorite Dish: The Chowdah!! ( Rhode Islanders would say it)

My Dad is the sailor in the family. He lives on his sailboat on the Chesapeake, but has sailed these waters numerous times.... He told me you haven't been to Newport until you've been to the Black Pearl. I've been to Newport.....

Favorite Dish: I recommend the outside deck, and the Striped Sea Bass.

The Black Pearl: The Classic Newport

by saltwaterandsails Updated Aug 22, 2006

The Black Pearl is nestled on Long Wharf in a pedistrian street of great restaurants and bars. The building is a old fashion timber construct, with massive sleepers across the ceiling. The restaurant emanates charm and warmth.

The venue feels like it has a long history - with sailors and buccaneers from long ago.

The seafood is spectacular, and the Seafood chowder is a must.

The Black Pearl: loads of New England character and black rum

by SurfaceTravel Updated Sep 20, 2006

This restaurant has three dining rooms: the classic Commodore's Room, the Tavern, and the Waterside Patio. This review is about the Tavern, which tries hard, and succeeds, to create an old-time New England atmosphere. It's very nautical and dark, and is an authentic sailor's tavern. It closes from January 3rd to February 12th.

Favorite Dish: The clam chowder is excellent, so much so that they are selling it on-line from their web site. The bar also serves something rarely found outside of Bermuda: Gosling's Black Seal black rum from Bermuda. It has all the flavour of a dark rum without the excessive sweetness associated with it. You may also be able to buy a bottle in some of the local liquor stores. The only other place I have found this outside of Bermuda is at Dirty Dicks pub across from Liverpool Station in London.
