Dr. John Clarke is considered to be the founder of the Baptist faith in this country. A physician, minister and statesman he pioneered the religious libertys and was responsible for the first written constitution guaranteeing the right to religious freedom. He was also one of the cofounders who purchased the island (now Newport) from the Indians.
The church of Dr. Clarke which is now know as the United Baptist Church, John Clarke Memorial of Newort is where he served until his death. The current building dates back to 1846.
One of several churches in Newport. There are surprisingly many here. Seems like every other block will bring you to another one.
