Easton Beach/First Beach
Newport has many beaches, but one of the best has to be this one located on Memorial Boulevard. This beach which is also known as First Beach has some fantastic views of the beautiful Cliff Walk. There is a carousel, playground, and an aquarium which makes this beach a perfect place for families with children. There is also a concession stand and some beach houses nearby.
Parking is available with many restaurants within walking distance of the beach.
The Beaches of Newport
There are several beaches to choose from in Newport. You should definately drive Ocean Drive which takes you along the edge of the perimeter of the peninsula past park areas, rocky places to fish off the rocks, places to fly a kite.... or just plain enjoy the views. It will loop you right around to the business center of the city again. There is Easton's Beach where we just sat and enjoyed the views cause it was March... and only a few brave souls were out walking their dogs. Summertime would be the time to explore Gooseberry Beach, or...if you are invited....Bailey's Beach and Hazard's Beach. There are tons of beaches in Rhode Island. You'll find that some have surf, some very calm, some rocky, some with dunes. Because of the very irregular coastline, the waterfront can be extremely different at each turn. Have fun and enjoy them all!
How could I forget? You could do the CLIFF WALK which is a walkway that starts on Memorial Blvd just about 3 or 4 blocks beyond Bellevue Avenue... and ends over near Bailey's Beach. You'll be passing in front of some of the mansions...some of it is rough terrain. Check in with Newport Information Center for full info. on length and map location...or...

Some Local Beaches
Since Newport is on an island, there is bound to be some shoreline and there are in fact several beaches both public and private in town. Each town has it's own beaches, for which you need a permit or a ticket to park during the summer. Winter is a season investigate them all since you can park and go where you like without the crowds. Look at a map for clues.
If you're in Newport, you have to hit up the beaches. They have the quintessential New England charm with sand dunes, rocky cliffs, and soft sand. I recommend 2nd beach which is actually in Middletown. From second beach you will have a perfect view of St. George's Cathedral tower and the cliff of Purgatory Chasm. Third beach is also an option which is a little further down the road on the bay side. Third beach is basically a salt water lake--no waves and the swimming area is roped in (which is nice if you have kids). Beware, at all the beaches there is a hefty parking fee, (something like $15 to $20) but in my opinion well worth a fun filled day.
