The Newport Colony House was designed after an English Town Hall. It contains an open marketplace which can be found on the first floor of the house with the civic offices on the second floor.
The house was intended to make what is now Washington Square into an elegant meeting place. According to some research I did, the "Colony House is the fourth oldest American state house which is still standing. The mayor of Newport announced the Declaration of Independence on its front steps"
Tours are conducted by appointment and donations are welcomed.
The Colony House is also known as Old State House or Newport Colony House. The Colony House is located in Washington Square. The building was completed in 1741 and is in the Georgian style. It was the meeting place for legislature from colonial times to the early 20th century. The building was also used as barracks, a hospital and a courthouse over the years. Famous political historical fgures such as George Washington and Dwight Eisenhower have visited the Colony House. It was even used in the Steven Spielberg movie Amistad. It was made a National Historic Landmark in 19960 and is part of the Newport Historic District.
