Matthew Calbraith Perry was a commodore of the United States Navy and served during a number of wars including the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and was instrumental to the opening of Japan to the west through the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854. Perry was also a strong proponent of education and helped develop the curriculum for the Naval Academy. With the invention of the steam engine for ships, Perry advocated the modernization of the fleet and is considered the father of the steamship Navy. Perry is revered in Japan and the part he played in opening up Japan to the west was a big part of the ceremony I saw in Touro Park.

One of the statues in Touro Park is of William Ellery Channing. Channing was born in Newport in 1780 and was the grandson of William Ellery who signed the Declaration of Independence. Channing was an early founder of Unitarianism and the Channing Memorial Universalist Unitarian Church is dedicated to him.

Touro Park has a few statues of historical figures from the area, a "mystery" tower and is the site of many local special events and celebrations. It also has many sites to visit nearby like the art museum, the tennis museum, and the Redwood Library. Nice place to relax. When I was there they were having a special event honoring the friendship between the U. S. Navy and the Japanese Navy.

Every time I visit Newport I walk through Touro Park. It's a nice park right on Bellevue and has some nice trees, statues and the Old Stone Mill. Every season brings it own district flavor to the park: the fall with its colorful leaves, the winter snow, the new spring flowers and the full bloom of summer.
