Car ., Newport
We always arrive in Newport by car and depending on whether we visit any of the mansion we will then park the car in the mansion parking lot, which is provided for free while visiting the mansion. You can also leave your car in one of the many mansion lots and come back when you have done your touring (for those mansion in close proximity).
If we just want to walk around and have no set plan, then we usually park our car at either the Gateway Visitor's Center or at one of the many parking lots located throughout Newport.
If we are visiting for the night then we will leave our car at the hotel parking facilites and enjoy Newport either by trolley or by foot.
** Please note, that if you are visiting for the day, you should park the car in the visitor's center and take the trolley or enjoy Newport on foot.**
Going to Newport can be likened to comming to America. I have left Chalse De Gull Paris in the evening of August 22..to connect another flight from Heathrow in London. That was the first leg. The second leg, was from Heathrow to JFK New York. And the third leg of the trip to Newport, was from Yonkers by road through Connecticut to Rhode Island. Hence, the picture of the Ford Explorer which I used and that of the Aircraft (British Airways).
This tip thus explain both to and Around movements.
Coming from New York City, it was tough to find a rental car available in Manhattan on Memorial Day weekend. So, we ended up renting a car at the Newark Airport. Since it was only a $15 upgrade, we decided to rent the tank-like Chrysler 300, which provided a comfortable way to drive up through Connecticut toward Newport. With two drivers and insurance, the rental came to around $150 for the day. We spent another $54 on gas to get to and from Newport.

We got there by car and it is easy to drive around and see all you want to see. But you can also use this bus to drive you around.
Also drove around there by car, parked it close to the Breakers and walked up there. Then we did some scenic drive which was great.
Interstate 95, one of America's longest motorways runs from Miami, Florida to the Canadian border at Houlton, Maine passes through Providence, RI, making Newport well connected by road.
