Rhodes on the Pawtuxet is quite a large ballroom which has been a popular dance hall since the era of the big band sound. Originally there was a canoe club which allowed you to paddle on the river with your sweety. The hall has an excellent dance floor, a stage, and a balcony to sit and observe... or hide out (whichever your intentions).
There is a large bar in the reception area and several smaller spaces to accomodate brides or caterers... meetings or reservation plans.
There are 2 huge parking lots ... one at the top of the hill and one below. Aussie and I visit the grounds so she can check out the traces of other critters.
The ballroom is used for weddings, political events, large meetings, holiday parties, visiting music groups and a host of other special uses.
When I was a kid we used to go to record hops there... or a school prom might be held there. Rhodes has lots of happy memories for lots of people.... in several generations.

Dress Code: Notice the dress code in 1912...the date on the post card ... trolley cars brought people out to Rhodes on the Pawtuxet for an evening of dancing. Trolley cars were quite new and it was an exciting adventure to travel those 5 miles away from home in Providence. The gazebo was built as a trolley waiting station and it still stands today.
I included a 2nd old post card showing the canoe club at the rear of the Rhodes dance hall. You could rent a canoe and romance your lady as you paddled lazily along the winding river.

The village is called Pawtuxet Village. The river is Pawtuxet River. . . hence, Rhodes on the Pawtuxet. It was THE place to be!!

Santa listens to the wishes

Each year the local organization, PVA (which I'm very active in) entertains the community with a holiday celebration. It begins at the local Episcopal church, but is an ecumenical service with the church choir and the wonderful voices of a local grade school chorus. The Pawtuxet Rangers then lead a procession throught the village carrying old fashioned candle lit lanters...and stopping traffic as they go. Everyone sings carrolls and the drummer keeps the cadence. Arriving at the little park at the waterfront, everyone gathers around the gazebo, the Christmas tree, and the menorrah to light up the park with merryment and applause. There are carrollers who sing in traditional costumes. Everyone makes their way to the BoatHouse which is a little public building we all use for meetings and such. There is Santa for the kids with little goodies and the rest of the crowd enjoys chatting with neighbors, hot chocolate and home baked cookies donated by the local parents. It's a real old fashioned community holiday...open to all. You are invited to join us next year.

Dress Code: Dress warm!! Sometimes it's very chilly out there! Thankfully this year we had a much milder evening.

Gazebo in the park

Bring your lawn chair or a blanket...a picnic lunch or a bottle of wine....and kick back in the park during the summer evening concerts in the park. Very low key...and totally relaxing. Concerts are free. There is a breeze off the water.

THOUGHT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN WHAT I WROTE TO ANOTHER VTer ABOUT OUR EVENING IN THE PARK LAST NIGHT....
You would have enjoyed our little evening of music in the park last night. We had folk music in the gazebo of the park by the water (see my Pawtuxet tips) and then random folks paddled their canoe or kayak in the cove with various illumination. Very funny. One kayak had a string of lights, a lighted palm tree and several rings of irridescent plastic around oars, arms, necks, etc. My daughter and her husband chose a fishing pole with two lighted paper lanterns dangling off the stern of their canoe. We brought a picnic supper and drank rum cokes. I passed around some cut strawberries with cream. Kids played on the swings...and dogs behaved very well.
