If you have time, a drive to a few sites on island is well worthwhile. Among these is
the famous Lighthouse called Beavertail Light. It is located within park over a rocky shoreline that is beautiful with it's waterviews,
places to pull up a chair and sit, catching the breeze, take photographs or cautiously climb around the rocks. The lighthouse is sometimes open and there is also a little
naturalist museum. Many pictures and photographs of this famous landmark are available in shops. An old military bunker
is closed up, but sits upon one little hill.
On the road to Beavertail, you pass a
lovely cove with a sandy beach. This is Mackeral Cove. With shallow water and small waves it is ideal for family with children.
There is a charge for non-residents to this beach during the high season.

Old Bunker

The island of Jamestown was really off the beaten path until a bridge was built fromthe mainland and to Newport. Now it is more accessible to people traveling through and over the bridges. The harbor and downtown
is lovely, with shops, restuarants and marine
supplies.( especially important if you are coming by boat). It is a lovely place to stop
for lunch or dinner or anytime traveling over a big bridge is no obstacle. (For example;
days when they are working on the bridge,
very windy bad weather days, or snowstorms.

An area south of Porvidence in the southern part of Rhode Island. Includes many lovely
sandy beaches and a rural and relaxed feel.
Many places to walk, bike, eat sea food.
Point Judith is where many people get the
ferry for Block Island which is a very lovely retreat. There are many tourists during the summer.

You can't say that you have experienced the state of Rhode Island without visiting the city of Providence which is the capital. It is a city built upon seven hills and there are many
lovely old buildings and nice views. Over time, the waterways in an around Providence
are being rehabilitated and the experience of
"water fire" is not to be missed. Among the important sites are Brown University and Thayer Street, the RISD (rhode Island school of design) museum. and the Gov. Builidngs. Providence also has a nice Zoo.

I believe rhode island hosts national surfing competitions every year. However it is important to remember that surfing goes by season. I was there in the summer and therefor only had about 2 1/2 foot waves to play with...still good for body surfing though!

The Mansions in Newport

Don't get me wrong, i love the mansions in Newport. The only problem, for the Tourist, is that there are too many of them. You cannot see them all in one day, nor would you want to. Too many mansions in one day can give you a headache. So see two or three at the very most and choose wisely. I recommend the Marble House, since it is really spectacular and it reminds me of Cinderella at the ball.

Fun Alternatives: There are lovely sites out of doors to enjoy in Newport and to balance the indoor experiences. I reccommend the cliff walk or parts of it, a walk down Thames street, and
the Ocean Drive is not to be missed.

walking trails are found in or near many towns, but they are not always easy to find. Town hall may have some information for the visitor or new resident with time to explore and the will to walk...

One day we decided to go for a drive and stumble upon this fairly wealthy island. I belive it was Newport. Bob Dylan was playing there that weekend so it seemed to be very busy. Amazing cars, houses and yachts...yes yachts! It is definetly worth n afternoon drive...

The advantages of the Minor Leagues

LIke Baseball? Well, there is plenty of it in the parks of RI. Only thing is, Boston is where you have to go if you want to watch the Major Leagues. Of course, we are closer to New York than Boston is, so some people make the effort to go there to catch the Yankees or the Mets. Most Rhode Islanders keep it regional and root for the Red Sox. Nowadays, with the price of tickets being so high and the technicalities of commuting so complicated, there is a more local alternative
and it's much cheaper too. The AAA Farm team of the Boston Red Sox is based in Pawtucket ,RI and who knows, you might get to see one of the Red Sox stars in rehab. on their way back up!
