When visiting Newport for a day there is so much to see and do that to visit 5 or 6 mansions would take your entire day. I recommend buying the Breakers Plus ticket that allows you to visit the Breakers Mansions and one other Mansion, since each mansion tour is about 45 minutes. Save the rest of the day to walk the Cliff walk, explore downtown Newport, drive on Ocean Drive and dining at many of the fine seafood restaurants.

Newport and other RI beaches are packed full of tourists in the summer, especially on the Independence Day and Labor Day long weekends. Prices for accomodation can be outrageous during these times (actually the whole summer). Prime beach front rentals can easily fetch several thousand dollars a week. Hotels and motels charge 2 to 3 times what they do in the winter. The best time to go is right after Labor Day when the crowds disappear and the water's still warm.

You say you'd like to live on your own island? There are several within Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay. This one is North of the Jamestown Bridge.
