Clouds Hill Farm mansion was built by William Smith Slater..nephew of Samuel Slater...founder of the textile industry in America. The house has been in the same family since it was built and contains all the family's possessions and furnishings from years of travel and wealth and gifts from notables around the world.
There are a pair of china vases which were a gift from the King of Siam around l856! There are French marble mantles and an extraordinary Egyptian room, the list goes on.
The current owner has only recently gotten museum status for the house which stands overlooking Greenwich Bay on a hillside at the south end of the city driving towards East Greenwich.

Oakland Beach

Oakland Beach neighborhood in Warwick saw its hay day in the late victorian era when there was a grand old hotel on this site. However, hurricanes took that away and now we have a few restaurants and a public beach which mostly locals go to. We like to bring Aussie to the beach in the evening and pick up fish and chips or clam cakes and chowder from Iggy's. We can sit on the beach and enjoy the view and the breeze while we have casual supper.

Sea gulls are as common as grass here in Warwick. Oakland Beach has lots of them because they know there are clam cakes and such being dropped by friendly bird lovers all the time. This man obviously makes a habit out of visiting the great white birds.

Good Breakfast Buffet: Great American Grill

The Great American Grill is the breakfast option for the Hilton Garden Inn. Usually the Hilton Garden Inn is the best priced so we stay here when we are in the area for a family function.

The breakfast here is good. It is set up buffet style with assorted fruit, juices, yogurt, cereal, breads and pastry. There is also an area to place orders for eggs, pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon and hash browns. Place your order and the waiter will bring it to your table. I like that these items are tailor made to your preferences and not sitting out in a heating dish.

Pancakes here are better than the waffles which can be hit or miss (either too undercooked or made just right). Bacon here is good and they give a large serving as well as the hash browns. We have always enjoyed the breakfast here and the service is very good. The staff was very accomodating with finding a high chair for our nephew and getting him some lemons to chew on(yes he teethes on lemons).

Bertucci's: Good Brick Oven Pizza

Bertucci's is a national chain of Pizza/Italian restaurants taht specialize in brick oven pizzas. My wife and I have enjoyed these restaurants in many locations and found this location prefectly situated to our hotel.

After a long family function we all just wanted to go back to the hotel to relax and grab a bite to eat. We decided to order some pizza from Bertucci's to bring back to the hotel. We ordered a large Margherita pizza with a side of their delicious warm rolls. Pizza was ready for pick up in about twenty minutes and was a perfect choice for a hungry bunch of four.

The pizza here is consistently good from location to location. The crust is thin and crisp just how I like it. There is a variety of toppings to chose from and they are all delicious. They also have more substantial food available such as mussels, chicken parm, panninis and pasta.

Favorite Dish: The Margherita pizza is my favorite. Creamy fresh mozzarella cheese, plum tomatoes and basil on a thin, crisp crust.

Iggy's: Clam cakes & Chowder

Iggy's is where you go for clam cakes and chowder. Or..fish and chips. They also make dough boys. Lots of folks ask what is a clam cake? It's a batter with chopped clams which is deep fried, and you sprinkle salt on them, eating them with your hands. They are a natural with chowder. We have chowder made with milk... or the tomatoe style...but if you are a real old salty... you'd have chowder with a rich broth and none of that extra stuff. That's the way you get a real clam flavor.
Lines form on Friday night or a hot summer night. They are ordering take out food to take down to the beach or bring home for a simple supper. You can eat inside the restaurant as well, but it doesn't give you that salty, sandy feeling like being out at the beach.

Iggy's doughboys and chowder house: Stand in line at Iggy's

Fried Heaven

Fried seafood is the specialty here. Clams, shrimp, fish and chips, scallops, calamari, and doughboys.

A doughboy is clams fried in batter, it's also called a fritter by some folks.

I also like stuffed Quahogs, which are the native clam of Rhode Island.

They also have very good clam chowder, white for the real New Englanders, or red for the New Yawkas.

You can either eat inside, on the back deck, or get it to go. In the summer the long lines are famous.

Favorite Dish: My favorite is fried scallops.

Kitty wants to go too...

Luggage and bags: A small rollaboard suffices for a short weekend trip.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Dress according to the weather and always bring extra just in case.

Miscellaneous: Don't pack the pets! Our kitty always tries to tag along with one of her toys...we have to check to make sure she doesn't get zipped up with the clothes.
