I had asked the hotel about when we should get going to get to the beach. The recommended early because Saturday is the change over or the weekly condo rentals. They were right, at 8:00am, there was a lot of traffic leaving the island, which was good, we were going in.
When you look at all the parking on the Island, a lot is metered, which is free on the weekends. We left the hotel at 8am, got there around 8:35. Once we got on the island, we went start towards the Cross Island Parkway, followed that until it hit Pope Ave. Right at the corner of Coligny Circle (the end of Pope Ave), there is a very large free parking lot. Just 3 minutes off the beach. When we left at around noon, there was only a handful of spots open and seemed to be people that were leaving after being there all morning. We went there on a Saturday in the summer months.

If this is your first time to come to Hilton Head, please come in the day. Night travel is very diffidult due to the lack of street lights. We found our resort at night only because our road sign was lit up by the traffic lights.
Just trying to find Wal-Mart can be a challenge. You turn by the sign and then go hunting for the building due to the curves in the roadways and the strategically put landscaping.
They do have 4 lanes all around the Island, with speed limit of 45 mph.
A plus is, you can take a bike almost everywhere. There are bike paths all over the Island.

There are two main traffic circles on the island, so know where you're going before you get to them. Also, there is a cross island parkway, but you have to pay a toll to use it. If you stay on the main road, you'll get across the island cheaper, though it may take a little longer.

This looked like fun! Go rent a Kayak if you don't have you own and paddle around to see the sites. There are many places that rent water sports equipment so check the local visitor center for more details and prices.

We drove. Take Highway 278 exit off of I95 and it runs right into Hilton Head Island...about 35 to 40 miles.
Best way is by car, but there are lots of bicycles everywhere. Something that is very interesting is that all of the stores, shops, etc., are back off the highway and it's difficult to find things because of the trees. It sure is beautiful though.
