Hilton Head Island Things to Do

  • Harbour Town

the harbour town lighthouse was built in 1970 and is the most recognizable modern symbol of hilton head island. inside of the lighthouse is a viewing area, small museum, and a gift shop. at the base of the lighthouse are a couple of restaurants and harbour town marina. a very touristy thing to do when on hilton head island. note there is a $5 fee...

  • Beaches

We found the amount of ways to "entertain" our children on Hilton Head Island numerous, but expensive. So we didn't do any of it. We packed up and spent two days at the beach! There we saw dolphins playing (yes, very, very close to the shore. So close that my son said, "oh mommy, look the dolphins came to play with us.") We found sand dollars, star...

  • The Village at Wexford

The Village at Wexford is a great place to shop! It embraces the historic and peaceful life that Hilton Head was once known for- and it offers what many visitors on return visits seek out. The Village is an oasis where locals flock and tourists can enjoy a true island experience without being bombarded with "touristy things." I enjoy all the shops...

  • Something fishy is going on...

Poseidon is the new, hip eatery in Shelter Cove, featuring "coastal cuisine" and what I am sure is a terrific view from the rooftop bar. I was there for my birthday in February, when al fresco dining was not in the cards, so I can only attest to the energy of the main, nautically-themed dining room. It was pleasantly crowded at lunch, and the...

  • Great views, great food

Even though it is called a "pub" (and there may well be a snuggery concealed somewhere on the premises), our Sunday meal at the Old Fort was miles away in atmosphere and cuisine. We were seated on a glassed-in verandah -- in warmer weather, there is plenty of outdoor seating -- with a lovely view over the Skull Creek and down towards the bridge to...

  • Impressed with Giuseppi's

We had reservations at the Marriott Resort and Sap across the street from Guiseppe's in Shelter cover, so we stopped for lunch here about 1:30 on Sunday afternoon; they were still busy but said we would be seated in about 20 minutes. It didn't take that long and our server came to our table right away. We ordered the Carboli Calzone and Original...

  • Reliable Diamond Transportation

We had a little challenge when one of us drove to the hospital and then realized that they couldn't drive back. Enter Diamond Transportation, which bills itself as "The Island's Finest" and which certainly did the job on a horrible rainy foggy night. Thank you!Diamond will also do airport runs, dinner and nightlife driving, etc.

  • If not staying on the island, get going...

I had asked the hotel about when we should get going to get to the beach. The recommended early because Saturday is the change over or the weekly condo rentals. They were right, at 8:00am, there was a lot of traffic leaving the island, which was good, we were going in. When you look at all the parking on the Island, a lot is metered, which is free...

Hilton Head Island Shopping

  • Outstanding top-end consignments

Although much of the merchandise is designer and upscale women's and some men's clothing, My Sister's Closet also has jewelry, furs, china, and other interesting items, generally reasonably priced (and with a scheme which reduces the ticketed prices by 10% or more depending upon the length of time an item remains unsold). I don't even know how to describe this shop....Scents of Hilton Head.....it just smells good. • Fake Lighthouse

I did not go up to the top of the lighthouse to patronize this shop. First, I didn't want to give any money to people who put up a lighthouse billboard as a tourist attraction and then try to pretend that it is a real lighthouse instead of just being a giant advertisement. Signage is very strictly regulated in Hilton Head, and this structure...

    Take a walk

by tpangelinan Written Apr 11, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Take a walk on the beach, the sand is firm and the beach is wide a long. If you look down while you walk there are plenty of shells to find. It's very peaceful here and not to many people. Very relaxing.

    Beach jog or walk

  • Dark Streets

We arrived in Hilton Head at dusk. We felt that the dark streets with few signs and no lights were VERY hazardous. The small mile marker signs that dot the highway as a point of reference to visitors were not much help. Fortunately it was off-season and there wasn't as much traffic.Buildings share similar architecture, green roofs, sand colored...

  • Warning--air borne cabanas!!

Whoa--maybe some people knew not to leave cabanas on the beach when unattended, but we didn't. It seemed like a good idea to bring some shade to the beach, but when the ocean breezes took it to the heavens we learned something new. Since the beach was just steps away from our home rental, we had gone in to grab something for lunch. Bad...

So far, we've been in Hilton Head for 5 hours (we are planning to stay for three days) and we've been pressured three times by timeshare sales people. They are all over the island. A lighthouse is a tall structure topped by a powerful light used as a beacon or signal to aid marine navigation or a tower with a light that gives warning of shoals to passing ships. Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Make sure to take along some form of sun protection. I am fairly dark complected and using an SPF of 50, I still managed to get a little pink. You don't want to spend your vacation sore and out of the sun so make sure you bring protection!

Hilton Head is all about Nature, but it is Nature groomed so that it looks pretty and doesn't interfer with the main playground - kind of like Disney for Golfers.
