located on the grounds of the marion county courthouse is a statue of the famous revoluntionary war general francis marion. marion was nicknamed the "swamp fox" and is considered one of the founders of modern guerilla warfare. after the continental army was driven out of south carolina at the battle of camden marion led a militia that harassed british troops in the pee dee area of south carolina between 1780 and 1781. after the revolutionary war marion served as a south carolina senator.
the marion county history center is located in the 1903 records building next to the marion county courthouse. at the history center you can research old county records and get information on the history of marion county.
the current marion county courthouse was built in 1853. the architecture of the courthouse is classical revival with elements of a low country plantation home. for those interested in southern architecture the courthouse is worth a look when in marion.
