Sea oats are an important plant, which helps to preserve the sand dunes along the coast of South Carolina. Its roots help to anchor the sand and prevent it from being blown away by the wind or washed away by the waves of the ocean. For this reason it is against the law to cut or uproot the sea oats or any other beach vegetation. It is also against the law in South Caroline to feed alligators.
