    Swim flags

I have the WORST luck with weather it seems.... or maybe I travel so much eventually i run into bad weather... but inparticular Hurricanes have haunted my vacations... Charlie, Ivan, and Frances all delayed me last year on Miami trips, and this year Katrina sent me home early, and this time Ophelia closed the beaches on the South Carolina shore. My tip is... if the flags are up, DO NOT try to go into the ocean, I did this and the undercurrent can pull even the best swimmer under....so obey the flags, and the lifegaurd!

    Riptides when swimming
  • Tip Rating:
  • The water can be tricky here. Riptides can take you out to sea so be careful of these. If you're in deep water and you feel yourself pulled out…get in quickly.

If you are pulled out to sea, remain calm and swim parallel to shore…eventually you'll break free of the riptide and you'll be able to swim towards shore then. It tends to be trickier in Myrtle Beach than the beaches of North Myrtle Beach.

During hurricane Dean in August 2007 the MB swimming area was closed down after about a dozen rescues, and I was at NMB and they were just fine.

    Immigration!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This isnt just for those travelling to Myrtle Beach but i think to the USA in general! We were stuck in immigration for and an hour and three quarters and almost (by the skin og our teeth) missed our connecting flight which also could have meant that we couldnt get down to Myrtle Beach until the following day. Be aware of the situation and if travelling to the States and have connecting flights be warned that you might not get them!

Always be sure to wear shoes or flip flops while walking around the beach especially at night when its hard to see the ground. Jelly fish do wash up and sometimes are hard to see. Our grandson was stung by one in Mexico this got him very sick and still months later you can still see the scar from it.

If you get a jellyfish sting
I found a great, natural product to treat jellyfish stings - STUNG, a jellyfish sting first-aid kit.

    www.stingkit.com

Inexpensive and small enough to throw in your beach bag.

I ordered directly through the company --- may be available in area drugstores too.

    HOpe this helps!

    Beware of storm
The storm come from the land - Myrtle Beach

In the evening, just before dusk, the clouds coming from the land covered quickly the beach. It is unusual : the storm used to come from the ocean.
The rain falled and the thunder rumbled.
Fortunately, it was not a tornado. Not even a severe storm. But impressive all the same.

    JELLYFISH STINGS!
Very long tentacles that can wrap around you! - Myrtle Beach
    Very long tentacles that
    can wrap around you!

Lived on the beach for several years; have gone to the beach just about every year since I was 11; but just recently have been seeing (and feeling) a lot more jellyfish stings. Starting researching why. Government sources state that due to water temp warming and overfishing, especially off of the Atlantic coast, much larger numbers of jellyfish will be coming in contact with beachgoers. They are estimating a 20-30% increase in JELLYFISH STINGS just for 2008; North & South Carolina 350,000; Chesapeake Bay 650,000 this; more for Florida, Gulf coast etc. I was severely stung at Key Largo, FL a couple of years ago and the pain literally lasted for about 1 month. Tried all of the OTC treatments and even prescription steroid creams and antihistamines but nothing helped. A friend of mine who is a scientist at Research Triangle Park told me about some spray for JELLYFISH STINGS call "STOP-STING" that she had found last year. Said it had serious scientific research behind it and it worked for her last year at Myrtle Beach when she got stung. Literally took away the pain, redness, everything. You may be able to find "STOP-STING" at the beach stores like Wings, etc, but the company that makes it is in TN (InterPax Technologies POB 1522 Milligan College, TN 37682). My bottle cost $30 which included shipping but it should last all summer easily. Read the instructions (detailed) and keep the bottle in the sun because my scientist friend told me that the warming of the solution in the bottle makes it work better.
Be careful out there but enjoy your self and your family as often and as long as you can. We love Myrtle Beach and may make that area are retirement home very soon.

You'd think I'd know better. The sun is intense here. If you are coming from a northern climate wear sunscreen! If it's summer, even more so! I didn't and paid the price.
